If I Could Meet One Person....

Without a doubt, Miss Marilyn Monroe.  No ifs ands or buts about it.  I've had the same answer to this question for over 20 years now.

This past weekend I saw My Week With Marilyn.  I was 30 minutes early for the flick and had to wait anxiously outside the theater doors as the staff inside were still busy picking up half-empty popcorn boxes and cleaning up sticky soda residue.  I got the perfect seat, dead center and the one towards the front with the bar which quickly became my own ottoman.  Popcorn in hand, a little buttery for my taste but screw it I've been good all week, and a Coke Zero in the cup holder, wide-eyed I waited in anticipation for the film to begin.

Michelle Williams was the perfect actress to play a role so rich and complex as this one.  Many starlets out there were dying to play Marilyn but the Weinstein company made the right choice with Michelle.  She oozed sexiness with just the right mix of grace. I read an article last week about how Michelle prepared for the role.  When asked about Marilyn's "wiggle" she said "It's not a figure eight, it's not a side-to-side motion.  It's like she's moving through honey."...think about that one again.  Yowza!

The film takes place in the summer of 1956...she was just 30 years old.  Addicted to pills and obviously not having dealt with the abandonment of her parents, a fragile Marilyn is shown.  Each room is silenced the second she walks in...not because she says anything but her utter beauty demands it.  Try and look away...you just couldn't.  Every woman is intensely jealous as they should be.  Nobody, except my mother of course (love you mom!) has ever come close to being as beautiful as Marilyn.  Every man wanted her and every woman wanted to be her.  And then we saw Norma Jeane.  The tears, loneliness and constant questioning of herself.  My Week With Marilyn gave us a hint of the inside life of this young, broken girl.

I left the theater quiet and saddened.  The beautiful Marilyn was human after all.

Jan - I didn't even think abou that....so true!  I bet she digs into those feelings for many of her roles.  Have you seen Blue Valentine with her and Ryan Gosling?  Cried my flippin eyes out but was SO DAMN GOOD!

But for the Grace of God..... many of us have demons that cause unhappiness for various reasons.  We each must deal with them and hopefully we don't take the path that Marilyn chose.  We all have much to be thankful for.

Hi Kerrie,

Being a baseball fan, I would like to meet her ex - Joe Dimaggio.  If she was there too, that would be great.

I think that she had a really sad story.  It's too bad.....I think she wanted fame, got it, felt trapped by it, but I'll tell you this....I want to see the movie.

My husband had a conversation with Marilyn at Truman Capote's place on Fire Island a few years before she died (my husband's first wife's uncle was the Arts & Leisure Editor of the New York Times).  He thought she was nice, very trusting, very insecure and unsophisticated, when she wasn't being "Marilyn Monroe."  We'll have to see this movie.

Marilyn is such an Icon, who could forget, often imitated but never duplicated! I'd like to see her on the big screen too.

I love Marilyn, her house recently sold in our area. She's also burried in Santa Monica. I love that she had so many issues, yet stuck with her career and let her beauty shine. Her vulnerability is definatley admirable.

Will have to channel her "moving through honey" in life, and maybe in my walk ;)

Muah,

Kim

Great review, Kerrie!  Sounds like a good movie for my daughter and I to see together.  She loves Marilyn Monroe and has a couple black and white's of her still in her room here at home.

Kerrie,  I don’t remember where but many years ago I saw something on Marilyn Monroe.  I learned of her life story and then felt sad for her and her life ending at such a long age. I’m glad you got your week with Marilyn and now know her beauty was bitter-sweet.

I think without a doubt, Marilyn Monroe would have been a very interesting gal to have met.  Among the living legends, my first choice would be the Dalai Lama, followed by Whoopie Goldberg and Warren Buffet.  I love to spend an afternoon on a lawn swing with each one, and just pick their brains, while drinking ice tea:-)
