Secret Recipe Revealed - Breakfast Casserole

In case you haven't picked up on it from my posts, my wife, kids, and I are all about traditions.  And what is one of the biggest traditions having to do with holidays?  Food.  As the kids grew up, it seemed that a new food was added to the "traditional" items every year because they liked it at 4 years old and didn't realize that it hadn't always been around.  A very important holiday tradition for us is breakfast.  The kids are more than happy to stop opening gifts on Christmas morning when the timer goes off announcing that the Breakfast Casserole is ready!  This is one of those recipes that my mom fouOh My, That Sounds Goodnd in a newspaper many years ago.  It is assembled the night before so there is no messing with ingredients when there are more important things to be doing!

Holiday Breakfast Casserole

6 slices of bread, cubed

1 lb. sausage meat, cooked and well drained

2 cups cheddar cheese, grated

6 eggs

2 cups milk

1 tsp. dry mustard

Spread bread cubes in buttered 9 by 13 inch cake pan.  Toss sausage and cheese together and spread on top of the bread.  Beat eggs; add milk and mustard (can be done in the blender).  Pour over bread mixture.  Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight or for at leat one hour.  Bake at 350 degrees uncovered until set and browned (40 to 50 minutes).  Serves 6-8.

I am hungry now! Thank you for posting this recipe. Easy to make and sounds yummy.  In my family, our tradition is blueberry muffins on Christmas morning.

Hi Linda - Hmm, maybe blueberry muffins would be good with this casserole.  We always have cheese danish (Entenmann's).

Hi Than - And when the kids say so, it IS SO.  : )

Okay, this is one I am definitely going to try! It sounds delicious! Most of the time my husband is in charge of breakfast on Christmas morning, but he always makes the same thing - canned biscuits! This casserole sounds so good, I think I'll take over the breakfast duty this year. :)

Well Rose, I am a fan of Pillsbury Biscuits when there is gravy involved; but not on Christmas morning!  I really hope you enjoy it!

I haven't had breakfast yet and this sounds good, Chris. Unfortunately, I'm out of town and can't cook. I'll try it at home.

Hi Rose,

Sounds Delicious so I think I will jot down this recipe and try it on Christmas morning too. And I love the bird picture. Is it a robin? Interesting coloring. Thanks for sharing.
