Have you ever seen a faucet with a little drip and thought... But it's only a little drip?  That little drip can turn into gallons of water waste.  According to the El Toro Water District of Lake Forest, California, a dripping faucet or fixture can waste 3 gallons of water a day.  That adds up to 1,095 gallons of water per year!  A continuous leak can cause even more water waste.  Take a look at these astonishing figures:

  • A  1/16 inch stream for 3 months =       74,000 gallons of wasted water
  • A    1/8 inch stream for 3 months =     296,000 gallons of wasted water
  • A  3/16 inch stream for 3 months =     666,000 gallons of wasted water
  • A    1/4 inch stream for 3 months =  1,181,500 gallons of wasted water

So, while it may seem inconsequential, a little drippy faucet or shower head can add up to big bucks on your water bill.  Worse yet is the terrible waste of water literally going down the drain.

The cure for a leaking faucet can be as simple as replacing a worn out gasket or o-ring that costs only pennies.  To learn the simple steps to repairing a leaking faucet yourself click here

Fixing a leaking shower head could be as simple to fix as a little soak in some white vinegar.  To learn how to fix a leaking showerhead yourself click here

These quick fixes cost pennies and only take a few minutes to accomplish.  It's good for the pocketbook and for the environment.  Here in California we make great strides to be aware of the water we use.  Unless we conserve now, we will undoubtedly face some serious shortages in the coming months.  Our snow pack has all but dissipated and with so little rain for the past 24 months, our dependence on water from neighboring states will reach record proportions.  I encourage you to take a look around your home and think of ways you might be able to conserve on water with just a few simple steps...and without sacrificing one bit of lifestyle.

Marlene - excellent information and stats! Leaking faucets not only drain the natural resources but also the green resources in the wallet when paying for city water....1,095 gallons a year! Wow! Thanks for the well thought out post!

Mary - Thanks so much for your comment.  I was startled by the stats.  Imagine if just one household in every neighborhood had a little drip - the proportions of wasted water would be really astounding...and the hypothetical is probably less than reality. Ugh!

Kaye - You're so right.  It's surprising how much trouble one little drip can cause...and that goes for water, too!
