When Jason Crouch sent me an email from the "Family Ties" group, inviting me to the “Inspired By Song” group, and their contest, I got very excited about it, but didn't realize the affect my own post would actually have on me. LOL! Here's one I bet you didn't see coming, thought I'd change it up a bit from my usual style of post that many of you are getting used to. (or should I say sick of) LOL! When you think of the American Dream, what goes through your mind? The American Dream for me, may be different than for you, but it is still something we all relate to in our own unique and special way.
Having grown up in a musical family for the better part of my years, music has played a more than significant role in my life. While I was considering what to submit in this post, The “American Dream” is what kept going through my mind. It is such a common and widely used term. What does it really mean? I guess that depends on who you ask. Can the quest for the American Dream have alternate consequences? On the surface, I’d have to say no way, but after I saw this first video, it inspired me so much, I had to create the second video to go with it called, “I Wanna Be Just Like You.” The words in these songs are so powerful; they can gladly replace any text that I would have written in their place.
I am dedicating this post to YOU and to anyone that will take the time to watch these. I also dedicate this to my family and most of all, my kids. This changed my perspective on things in relation to working so hard for the American Dream. It was like these songs and videos were written just for me, but I know they are for you too. :-)
I can't watch these without them emotionally clobbering me upside the head, EVERY SINGLE TIME! Maybe it’s because I am just like you, a hard working person, who is doing my very best to provide for my family. But maybe I was missing something very important in the whole process. In writing this post, I realized, just how much it has changed my entire outlook and focus on the "American Dream" now!
Even though I can really relate to this, it may not have the same impact on you, but I hope it touches you, even if in some small way. Thanks Jason for inviting me, and for helping me realize through your contest, what is truly important in the pursuit of the “American Dream!” This was a great “Lesson In life” for me. :-))

Irina - thank you for saying that, It's my goal in life to be the best role model I can for my kids. I know I fall short on many occasions, but there is no manual, and it's just not that easy sometimes. These videos really had an affect on me and some of my friends, it's always good to be checked and accountable for all we do in our purpose driven lives!

Roberta - I'm glad you enjoyed these. When I watch them, it reminds me what's really most important today and everyday. I am a very proud Father, but I think we can always do better. It takes love, kindness, peace and patience everyday to set the best examples for those around us. That's not as easy to do in today's environments. Candace - my friend, coming from you, that really means a lot to me. I know how you are with and about photos, so I am happy you approved! It's more than a blessing to have to right and honor to raise kids, but they are not really ours, they are his, and we are responsible! This is one of the greatest tests in life and it doesn't come with a workbook or manual. There's really only one way to do it right!! It's not our way either. When I said in the post that they clobber me upside the head EVERYTIME, I really meant it! My computer keyboard isn't waterproof, and I just can't see the letters on it anymore after I watch these. Still, I have to share and be honest, I think every man on the planet who has kids goes through some kind of emotional moment if they watch these.
Even my wife stood over my shoulder as I was proofing and editing this post and balled her eyes out. Then my 11 year old Brandon came into the room, saw what I was doing on youtube, hugged me from behind, and started crying as he said "I love you Daddy".....ok.....darn.....I'll be right back............ Cynthia - I think sometimes we are good, and sometimes we are bad, never intentionally bad, but we grew up just like someone else too! No one is perfect, but seeking perfection in parenting is ok to do. If we were all perfect and great parents and spouses, these videos would mean nothing and have no emotional effect on anyone. There is nothing to be ashamed of when we make mistakes, it's not recognizing them and trying to correct them that's the big mistake! I believe in the "American Dream" and I want my kids to wanna be like me, but only the good parts of me which I thank God exist!! :-)
Brad, are you trying to make me feel guilty for driving a BMW? I want you to know it is because of the gas mileage.
Anyway, It is a very good post, but don't stop doing what you usually do. I need the help.

Beautiful stuff Brad... what a fabulous slide show you put together. I did get a little misty watching that, you can just see the closeness you have with your family and its a wonderful thing to see these days. On the technology end, how do you put the slideshow together? You make me realize that for all the hundreds (maybe thousands) of photos of my kids, I really should do something with them more than just store them . . .

Rob - I'm really glad you enjoyed this. I do take things for granted sometimes and it's nice to be humbled, no matter how much it hurts. We have to come down out of the clouds, or get our heads out of the sand and see what's really the most important things in life. (referring to me, not you) These videos really hit home for me. Every word is convicting to me.
One time, I had to perform this song on stage, at a church for an illustrated sermon, and my kids walked out one by one to sit on the stage at my feet, and look up at me as I played "I Wanna Be Just Like You" on an acoustic guitar. Talk about a "Life Changing" experience, MAN, that was a turning point for me. I totally lost it!! I will never forget that day the rest of my life!!

Natalie - the one song for my son, I made the picture/video. This is not my recorded version of the song though. It was sung by Phillips Craig and Dean. I have performed this song on a few occassions, and I have to tell you, it's a tough one to sing. It's almost as hard to sing as it would be to sing Butterfly Kisses at a daughters wedding. I had mentioned above, where I had to sing this for a large audience, with my boys walking out on the stage, one at a time, and sitting at my feet while I played. A Priceless and Unforgettable Memory!!
The first Video/song is done by a group called Casting Crowns, and we do plan on performing this one as well. We may even do a recording of our own version. Great tunes...awesome message!! Thanks Natalie :-)

Hi Brad, I agree. It is good for our children to see (and hear) that we make mistakes but when we do, we acknowledge them and try to correct them. Now that is a good example and learning experience for our children. I also believe that the words "I am sorry" is a powerful tool.
Brad, Silence and stillness have enveloped my room. You never cease to amaze me. A couple of days ago I was listening to an old Amy Grant "My Father's Eyes" as I drove from one appointment to another. I was singing along (aren't cars great) and thinking of the legacy I was creating for my daughter and loved ones. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, your wisdom, your family and your life. The second video was just as important to me because of the memories it stirs that I have had with my kids. They are all just a little bit like me, and some of the things, I don't want them to be. Brad are you kidding me?? You need a disclaimer that a box of tissues is needed for this one! What a beautiful dedication to your son. I have been struggling lately with working too much and not spending enough time with the kids. My 8 year old really wanted me to go fishing with him or go to his drum lessons and I figured well dads there, why does he want mom there? (I'm still crying BTW) those are dad kind of things. Sometimes it takes a smack in the head (or touching post) to get the message loud and clear. I am truly honored by your selecting me as a finalist in the contest, and I am even more pleased with the results this post had on many of these members and readers. I know how tough it was to select 3 winners, I spent the evening last night looking at the majority of posts and they were all winners. He is an adorable little guy, and when he sees this post and watches the video I made, he cries and says, "I love you so much daddy, you're my best friend in the whole world!" Jesse Reeves and Chris Tomlin are phenomenal artists! I went to a retreat and got to meet Chris a couple years back. He did a workshop for musicians like myself, and was truly an inspiration and motivator to me. Let me know if they are ever looking for a guitarist and female vocalist. Lynn - I totally can relate! I feel the same as you do about my boys! They are my inspiration, my gift, and my motivation to exist everyday of my life! Nothing means more to me than my family and their well-being! Our kids are always watching and listening, and I have learned that they will do what we do, and not what we say! That is why the video I created probably affected me more than any other viewer! It takes the message straight to the heart! Sarah - I am looking into creating an AR project! With all the talent and musicians I have met and know here, I think we could start an online music group and call ourselves, "An American Band!" There are ways that we can utilize the internet to create, record, and produce music and never leave our homes to do it! I may be doing an ALL OUT call post for any AR musicians. I would love for you to be a part of it.
There used to be a site called Res-Rocket (I know there are others) where I could upload the drum beat, someone else could come in and add the bass line, then another the keyboard and so on. I met up with 4 or 5 great musicians all over the world and this is one of the songs we compiled! This was done 100% online! I would love to do something like this with our musically gifted AR members. Take a listen! It was done using all midi tools and instruments! Hope you enjoy it!
Brad, ok ok, I am touched and in more than just the head. I really like the Casting Crowns. However, your video is what touched me more. A blog I recently did went right in line with this. Brad, This has been o my mind allot lately. When I got into Real Estate, due to me still being a manager of a pool store, I told her right up front that she wouldn't see me much over the next two years while I built my business. Notice, I was putting importance on the business over God and my spouce and family. I thought I was doing the right thing. I was wrong. This is not the way it is to work, besides it won't work without God, my wife, my family, and I being in line. May God Bless you and yours this Holiday Season.

For some reason I have never heard the American Dream song. I love it. It really made me stop and think. "I want to be like you" has become one of my favorite songs and the prayer of my heart.
Karen - it really is a great tune. Everyone needs to hear that one once in a while! I have a personal tie to the other song, my 3 boys are truly my life. The youngest one is who I featured in this video. He always tells me that he wants to be like me and that helps keep me on my best behavior. Always have to be on your toes with little and big ones around! They watch and hear everything we do, even when you think they don't! :-)
