When Jason Crouch sent me an email from the "Family Ties" group, inviting me to the “Inspired By Song” group, and their contest, I got very excited about it, but didn't realize the affect my own post would actually have on me. LOL! Here's one I bet you didn't see coming, thought I'd change it up a bit from my usual style of post that many of you are getting used to. (or should I say sick of) LOL! When you think of the American Dream, what goes through your mind? The American Dream for me, may be different than for you, but it is still something we all relate to in our own unique and special way.

Having grown up in a musical family for the better part of my years, music has played a more than significant role in my life. While I was considering what to submit in this post, The “American Dream” is what kept going through my mind. It is such a common and widely used term. What does it really mean? I guess that depends on who you ask. Can the quest for the American Dream have alternate consequences? On the surface, I’d have to say no way, but after I saw this first video, it inspired me so much, I had to create the second video to go with it called, “I Wanna Be Just Like You.” The words in these songs are so powerful; they can gladly replace any text that I would have written in their place.

I am dedicating this post to YOU and to anyone that will take the time to watch these. I also dedicate this to my family and most of all, my kids. This changed my perspective on things in relation to working so hard for the American Dream. It was like these songs and videos were written just for me, but I know they are for you too. :-)

I can't watch these without them emotionally clobbering me upside the head, EVERY SINGLE TIME! Maybe it’s because I am just like you, a hard working person, who is doing my very best to provide for my family. But maybe I was missing something very important in the whole process. In writing this post, I realized, just how much it has changed my entire outlook and focus on the "American Dream" now!

Even though I can really relate to this, it may not have the same impact on you, but I hope it touches you, even if in some small way. Thanks Jason for inviting me, and for helping me realize through your contest, what is truly important in the pursuit of the “American Dream!” This was a great “Lesson In life” for me. :-))

"American Dream" was written and performed by: Casting Crowns.

“The American Dream”

"I Wanna Be Just Like You" was written by Dan Dean and Joy Becker
It is performed by Phillips , Craig and Dean
The Video was produced at home with photos by Brad Andersohn

“I Wanna Be Just Like You”

Am I "Inspired by Song?" Absolutely and Positively YES!

My son always tells me, "When I grow up Daddy, I wanna be just like you!"  We are all touched in so many different ways by music, and to each of us, it's a personal and sometimes very emotional connection. These songs have had a huge impact on me and my life, I hope you'll enjoy them too.

Music and Life will be forever entwined, I am so grateful for what it does in, to, and for our lives!

This is a great post!  Thanks for sharing with us.  How could we be sick of your posts?  They are too remindful and educational for us to be sick of them.  By the way, I haven't called you yet because I moved to page 4 (you know what I'm talking about!).  Don't know when, why, or how...but it happened.  I still am planning to call you sometime though just to touch base.  Take care, my friend.

Irina - thank you for saying that, It's my goal in life to be the best role model I can for my kids.  I know I fall short on many occasions, but there is no manual, and it's just not that easy sometimes.  These videos really had an affect on me and some of my friends, it's always good to be checked and accountable for all we do in our purpose driven lives!

BTW - I love it when you Facebook "poke" me all the time! LOL! :-)

Roberta - I'm glad you enjoyed these.  When I watch them, it reminds me what's really most important today and everyday.  I am a very proud Father, but I think we can always do better.  It takes love, kindness, peace and patience everyday to set the best examples for those around us.  That's not as easy to do in today's environments.  Still, we must give it our all every second of the day. Thanks for your wonderful comment! :-)

It's not our way either.  Sorry you leaked (that was cute), but that means it did touch you in some small way, and that was all I wanted.  Contest or no contest, I have to thank Jason again for bringing this out of me. Brad,

Wow- I just sat and cried for the last 15 minutes.  What a wonderful video.  I feel I know you and your family a lot better.  I also have 3 boys around the same ages as yours  and most of the time its great!

Judy - if you have three boys just like me, well now I know why you spent 15 minutes crying!  I don't need the video for them to make me do that! LOL!  Just kidding, my kids are great, and sometimes I feel I don't deserve them.  Since I posted this, I have not watched either video again.

When I said in the post that they clobber me upside the head EVERYTIME, I really meant it! My computer keyboard isn't waterproof, and I just can't see the letters on it anymore after I watch these.  Still, I have to share and be honest, I think every man on the planet who has kids goes through some kind of emotional moment if they watch these.

Even my wife stood over my shoulder as I was proofing and editing this post and balled her eyes out. Then my 11 year old Brandon came into the room, saw what I was doing on youtube, hugged me from behind, and started crying as he said "I love you Daddy".....ok.....darn.....I'll be right back............ (5 minutes later) I'm ok now, just got a little ya know!!  Thanks Judy, love those boys with all you got! They'll do what you do, not what you say! :-)

Hi Brad,
We are models for our kids, we must make the decision if we will be a good one or a bad one.  Powerful and inspiring video.  Thank you.

Cynthia - I think sometimes we are good, and sometimes we are bad, never intentionally bad, but we grew up just like someone else too!  No one is perfect, but seeking perfection in parenting is ok to do.  If we were all perfect and great parents and spouses, these videos would mean nothing and have no emotional effect on anyone.  There is nothing to be ashamed of when we make mistakes, it's not recognizing them and trying to correct them that's the big mistake! I believe in the "American Dream" and I want my kids to wanna be like me, but only the good parts of me which I thank God exist!!  :-)

Rob - I'm really glad you enjoyed this.  I do take things for granted sometimes and it's nice to be humbled, no matter how much it hurts.  We have to come down out of the clouds, or get our heads out of the sand and see what's really the most important things in life. (referring to me, not you) These videos really hit home for me.  Every word is convicting to me.

One time, I had to perform this song on stage, at a church for an illustrated sermon, and my kids walked out one by one to sit on the stage at my feet, and look up at me as I played "I Wanna Be Just Like You" on an acoustic guitar. Talk about a "Life Changing" experience, MAN, that was a turning point for me.  I totally lost it!!  I will never forget that day the rest of my life!!

Natalie - the one song for my son, I made the picture/video.  This is not my recorded version of the song though.  It was sung by Phillips Craig and Dean.  I have performed this song on a few occassions, and I have to tell you, it's a tough one to sing.  It's almost as hard to sing as it would be to sing Butterfly Kisses at a daughters wedding.  I had mentioned above, where I had to sing this for a large audience, with my boys walking out on the stage, one at a time, and sitting at my feet while I played.  A Priceless and Unforgettable Memory!!

The first Video/song is done by a group called Casting Crowns, and we do plan on performing this one as well. We may even do a recording of our own version.  Great tunes...awesome message!!  Thanks Natalie   :-)

Jeff - I just checked it with both Microsoft Internet Explorer and Firefox and the 2nd video seems to be working just fine.  Not sure why your system won't let you play it, try again and see if it works.  I have no problems with either on my end. Hope you're doing well, it's great to see and hear from you again!  Thanks Jeff!

Hi Friend.  This is absolutely beautiful!!!!!!!!!  The first video is so very moving, and the storyline really hits home.  Great song, talented writers and singers too.

Your video with Brandon is awesome!  What a treasure it is, and how wonderful for you to let us all into your heart and family like you do.  Your photos tied in so beautifully with the words of the song.  You are truly talented.  I know your mama is proud!  As she should be.  Thanks for sharing.  Debbie and the boys are lucky to have you.

I must admit I held up pretty good until you made the comments about singing it in church with the boys at your feet, and then it was all over.  Oops, it is okay to cry for happy.

Linda - this was one of those posts that took me two days to hit the submit button.  I didn't want to let Jason down, but this one was also very personal.  I wasn't sure how much of the 'door' to open, but these are all my family and friends here now, so I went for it.  Thanks for your sweet comment, and for just being a great friend! I feel very fortunate to have friends like you here and outside of Active Rain.  I'll be in your area tomorrow, I'll try and stop by to say hi! Have a great night Linda, and keep me posted on the other stuff.  :-)

Brad - I'm back, bet you thought I wouldn't be, after all these posts!  What I wanted to say was my children too say they want to 'be like me' and so your post has caused me to take a step back and re-evaluate what I want them to 'be like'.  I want them to know their Mom has an "identity" in something and some ONE much greater than this business I own, the responsibilities I have, the friends and loved one's I associate with and tasks that keep me running.

Thank you again for a terrific post.  BTW, I didn't play the video's again, I don't have time to cry right now, I have work to do!

Jackie - that was beautiful, thank you for sharing.  The best examples we can set for our kids and families are those that create memories that will live with them forever. I want those memories to be the very best I can give to my children.  They deserve the very best, so I need the very best to learn from.  There is no other way I would have it.  Thanks again Jackie for coming back and commenting with such conviction!  You're a great mom, and I'm sure that's the part your kids will grasp as they grow up to be...just like you!  :-)

Trace - I am really glad you enjoyed these songs and videos.  They are very timely in today's RUSHED and busy society!  Life goes by so quickly, we must stop to realize what's really important in life and how hard we try and work for the American Dream.  All the while the little ones are watching and learning from everything we say and do!

Hey Donna - I recommend both CD's, both are awesome.

The First One: "American Dream" was written and performed by: Casting Crowns.

The Second One: "I Wanna Be Just Like You" was written by Dan Dean and Joy Becker

It is performed by Phillips , Craig and Dean

I created and produced the photo/video at home using te recorded version of the song! Glad you enjoyed it!

OK, you didn't warn me I was going to be ‘leaking' when I came to visit.  I always end up crying in church when they sing songs like this.

I love Casting Crowns and PC&D.  Your video is awesome, you couldn't have chosen a better song.  Brad, I'm betting you are one of the all time best fathers around.  I suspect there are some boys/young men thinking the same thing.

I am really glad you shared this post and pray it will be a blessing to all who read and watch.

BTW, I have most of your posts bookmarked too.

Hi Brad,
I agree.  It is good for our children to see (and hear) that we make mistakes but when we do, we acknowledge them and try to correct them.  Now that is a good example and learning experience for our children.  I also believe that the words "I am sorry" is a powerful tool.

Brad, my husband had the great opportunity to sing at a lot of baby dedications ~ of course, with our 8 kids we were in a lot of them too!

"I Wanna Be Just Like You" is one of my favorites, it's puts everything into perspective....

Brad, Silence and stillness have enveloped my room.  You never cease to amaze me.  A couple of days ago I was listening to an old Amy Grant "My Father's Eyes" as I drove from one appointment to another.  I was singing along (aren't cars great) and thinking of the legacy I was creating for my daughter and loved ones. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, your wisdom, your family and your life.  I wanna be just like you!

Susan - what a great description of the exact same thing I experience when I watch these videos. You are so on it!! :-)  Music is such a POWERFUL thing.  It's what makes any good movie, any good at all.  It sets us up and creates emotions based on its sound and style.  Music can make us sad, happy, even inspired.

My Fathers Eyes is a great song!  My good friend had to sing "Butterfly Kisses" at his daughters wedding a while back, I don't know how on earth he did that without cracking!!  Thanks for poppin by Susan, it's always great to see you, the door is always open for you.  :-)

Marlene - looks like these songs touched you in more than just a small way! :-)  You should have your husband watch them, from a man's eyes, it may really have an impact on him so be prepared.  I know the first time I ever saw the first one, I liked it and didn't feel to guilty at the time, but now, it sucker punches me! LOL!

The second video was just as important to me because of the memories it stirs that I have had with my kids.  They are all just a little bit like me, and some of the things, I don't want them to be.  When I see my little guys face to the words of that song, well........I leak!  Show your hubby he just might too! Thanks Marlene, really appreciate that comment!

Brad are you kidding me??  You need a disclaimer that a box of tissues is needed for this one!  What a beautiful dedication to your son.  I have been struggling lately with working too much and not spending enough time with the kids.  My 8 year old really wanted me to go fishing with him or go to his drum lessons and I figured well dads there, why does he want mom there?  (I'm still crying BTW) those are dad kind of things.  Sometimes it takes a smack in the head (or touching post) to get the message loud and clear.  He wants to share his experiences with both of us and I need to get off the computer and share them with him.  I know they grow up all to fast, my daughter is soon to be 20!!  Thanks for the gentle nudge!

Thanks for putting this all together, I'd be happy to share with you how I put videos together from the home studio. Just give me a call sometime, I'd be happy to help.

Jesse Reeves and Chris Tomlin are phenomenal artists!  I went to a retreat and got to meet Chris a couple years back.  He did a workshop for musicians like myself, and was truly an inspiration and motivator to me.  Let me know if they are ever looking for a guitarist and female vocalist.  My wife and I are getting back to the Heart of our passion, and hope to be out on the road again someday soon.  She's an incredible singer and is truly blessed with her gift!  If you'd like to here some of the stuff we did recently, feel free to browse my "Music Website" I think you'll enjoy some of our original material we've composed! Thanks again Jason, I am honored and humbled to have been considered for third place in your contest! It was totally awesome! GB!

Sarah - I am looking into creating an AR project!  With all the talent and musicians I have met and know here, I think we could start an online music group and call ourselves, "An American Band!"  There are ways that we can utilize the internet to create, record, and produce music and never leave our homes to do it!  I may be doing an ALL OUT call post for any AR musicians.  I would love for you to be a part of it.

There used to be a site called Res-Rocket (I know there are others) where I could upload the drum beat, someone else could come in and add the bass line, then another the keyboard and so on.  I met up with 4 or 5 great musicians all over the world and this is one of the songs we compiled!  This was done 100% online!  I would love to do something like this with our musically gifted AR members.  Take a listen!  It was done using all midi tools and instruments!  Hope you enjoy it!

The message you got from this post was the one I intended.  I am grateful that this message touched you in the way it did.  Sometimes we have to see these messages more often to remind us that society plays such a huge role in creating the pressures and illusions of the American Dream. Brad, This has been o my mind allot lately. When I got into Real Estate, due to me still being a manager of a pool store, I told her right up front that she wouldn't see me much over the next two years while I built my business. Notice, I was putting importance on the business over God and my spouce and family.  I thought I was doing the right thing.  I was wrong.  This is not the way it is to work, besides it won't work without God, my wife, my family, and I being in line. May God Bless you and yours this Holiday Season.

Earl - these are great words of wisdom, and often times overlooked!  I can also say it is sometimes easier said than done.  I have been on both sides of that fence and agree with you.  Your priority must be in order.  God, Family, Job!  I am guilty of not always putting my life and priorities in this order, but making this video for this contest, sure helped me put things back into perspective and priority!  Have a blessed and safe Holiday my friend! Your nick name is appropriate, you have great "pearls" of wisdom to offer and share with others!  Thanks!

For some reason I have never heard the American Dream song.  I love it.  It really made me stop and think.  "I want to be like you" has become one of my favorite songs and the prayer of my heart.

Thank you for sharing!!!

Karen - it really is a great tune. Everyone needs to hear that one once in a while!  I have a personal tie to the other song, my 3 boys are truly my life.  The youngest one is who I featured in this video.  He always tells me that he wants to be like me and that helps keep me on my best behavior.  Always have to be on your toes with little and big ones around!  They watch and hear everything we do, even when you think they don't!  :-)

Make yourself at home my friend, you have stumbled across probably one of my most important messages I've ever posted in the rain.  God, Family, Country, Career, is the great priority in life, and in that order.  Easier said than done many times, but always something to strive for.  Thanks for your kind comment, and like I said, my Blog is your Blog, as is my home, office and phone!!  :-) Ciao for now!!

Don - if you feel like the guy in the American Dream video, you're not alone!  I think it's an eye opening video that causes us to stop and think about what's really most important in our lives.  The American Dream is only a Dream until we realize who and what matters most!  Then the dream can become a reality!  :-)

Alexander - I can't tell you how many people that little video has had an impact on. I am blessed that folks DO listen to the words and not just the music. The message is so powerful, and I hope in some small way, my son and I are making a difference in the world with that video message, one life at a time.  We are both truly blessed by it!  Thanks my friend.  :-)

Brad,

Two great selections!  I love that you are a great Dad to your boys, and this song really puts it all into perspective.  You are the example for your son Brandon, and he will grow up to be a strong man because of the way you are raising him.  It's nice to see that you are sharing so many wonderful moments with him and creating great memories for him to cherish!  Thanks for sharing!
