Very good points, Jill. We love working with the senior market in Nashville TN. We tell our clients that we are working on their schedule, not ours. We find that sometimes they think they are ready to put the home on the market, but really aren't. And we assure them that is OK. Children may be clearing the home out and think it will take only a couple of weekends, but then they slow down when the memories start flooding back, and it takes a couple of MONTHS, maybe more.
We recently had a home listed that took a year to sell, and I think the seller needed that time to come to terms with selling the home where she raised her children.

Jill - you pretty much have an all-time great list. It is about feeling the need and making sure you are there for your customers/clients
Jill - I watched your video on YouTube
PATCHOGUE, NEW YORK - VILLAGE OF ARTISTS
Cool, I liked it. I am thinking of doing something like that. Video has a great way to present the community
Sarah and John - Thanks and you couldn't be more right about working on their schedule. Sometimes, there can be quite a gap between the time senior clients start thinking about possibly moving and the time they actually decide to list their home. It can't be easy to sell the house your children grew up in where all the memories were made. What comes next so much depends on good health and finances. For some it may be an adventure, a new chapter of something wonderful and exciting, but for others, not so much. One thing seems clear, however. When homeowners finally get rid of the noose around their neck - the house that has too much space, too many stairs, too much maintenance, and too many costs, they can breathe easier and really start to enjoy a simpler way of life.
Jon - Thanks so much. I compiled it from my recent experiences.
Definitely try a video. With all the time you spend lugging around a camera, you'll be a natural.
I'm trying to breathe life back into a community that has suffered in the last few years. In making this video, my hope is that future buyers will see Patchogue through my eyes, as someone who once lived there and knows what it has to offer.
Very cool, Jill. We need more of those types of agents around here. I am sure you do a great job. And, I like your silver lining chronicles.
I've always found it funny that when we're young and full of energy, we want to sleep in 'til noon. When we get older, we get up earlier and earlier. I wonder what the explanation is.
Jill, you've made great points. I often give my Senior clients a little book, Moving in the Right Direction: The Senior's Guide to Moving and Downsizing. It addresses the fear of moving, fear of making a bad decision, fear of the unknown that keep many people in a situaiton they no longer want.
Thanks, Ron. I try to keep on top of relevant issues affecting our seniors.
Eric - I'm quite sure it's a hormonal difference but we can also address this from a more philosophical standpoint - as in - they've reached a time of their lives when they're grateful for the start of every new day and they don't want to waste a second of it. After all, I'm sure you're familiar with "youth is wasted on the young." Young people have the luxury of believing there is all the time in the world and there will always be more.
Lottie - That sounds like a great book. I should do that as well. Is it put out by SRES?
Dear Jill - You have the perfect heart of Gold & compassion to fill these shoes! You are so right about all of the above & it does take time for them to make a decision, as it is scary for them. I have seen this with my parents. Hugs & they will so appreciate your warm heart in these transactions! Have a great weekend.
Hi Pam - Thank you for your kind words, but let's be reasonable. Mostly, I just do what I can. I would think it would be a terrible burden to have to be so perfect all the time. I guess you can kind of consider me an "old soul." I've always had the ability to relate to seniors and even more than that, I genuinely like them and can even "feel" what they feel. In other words, I can see my future.
Except for one of my closings, all my Clients have been seniors who are downsizing into condominiums so that they don't have the maintenance hassles.
Jim, well then you could have easily written this post. You have plenty of experience.
I've spent much of my life volunteering with the elderly. There's just something about their lives and attitudes that attracts me to them.
Hi Russell, Allow me to guess that it's because of the love and respect you've always felt for your grandma who, in essence, saved your life by giving you purpose, direction and discipline. I feel the same way you do.
