Temperatures in Denver have been rather frigid the last few days and dipping below zero at night. With the need to get up and get to work most days, it is important to have a car you can depend on to get you there! Here are some tips to help you and your vehicle during very cold weather.
~ Regular maintenance, such as oil changes and inspections. During this time have the technicians check the coolant or antifreeze. If it has not been changed lately, it may be time to do so. (If you do this yourself, be sure the car is cooled off, as when you remove the cap, you could get burned by this fluid.)
~ With colder temperatures, tires tend to lose air pressure. for every 10 degrees the temperature goes down, you could lose 1 pound of pressure. This could create more wear on your tires and get less gas mileage.
~ Warm up your car for 5 minutes before taking off. This allows the fluids to warm up and less chance for a stall while driving. (It is illegal to leave an unattended car, so be sure to stay inside the car.)
~ The mag-chloride that is put on the roads smells bad and the cars get filthy during this time of year. Try and avoid washing the car when temperatures during the day until temperatures get above freezing. The water gets into the locks and could freeze the locks and/or doors. You will have more troubles than a dirty car!
We are having a heat wave today and will see temps in the 30's!
