My Personal Thoughts on the U.S. Postal Service

By

Since no one ever seems to ask me what I think of the crisis at the Postal Service, I decided that today, I would use my blog to provide my opinion.

First off, I am a fan of the USPS. I remember as a little kid sending postcards and letters to pen pals around the country and the world. I use the postal service regularly for marketing and I still send Thank You notes. That said, I have some comments about the service.

I don't care about Saturday service. There are many services and vendors that I don't have access to on Saturdays and it is just fine. Examples of things I can't do on Saturdays: talk to my accountant or attorney, get dental work done, see a physician--except in an emergency, talk to an insurance adjuster.  If I can't do those kinds of business on Saturday, why does it matter if I get the mail on Saturday? I might LIKE to get the mail on Saturday, but I don't NEED to get the mail on Saturday (truth is, I don't even like getting it on Saturday...it is kind of nice to have a break from the bills and catalogs).

There has been a lot of talk about how budget cuts will result in a lack of next day delivery for letters. I did not even know that that was the expectation. If I need to get something there the next day, I use a next-day-shipping company. If they want to slip the delivery time, I expect I can wait a day on my Pottery Barn Catalog or my Verizon bill. Isn't two or three days okay for delivery? I am glad they have such high ambitions, but if that is causing all this trouble, then slip the expectations a bit. I don't get that many Thank you notes or invitations, it isn't going to matter if I get them on Monday instead of Friday!

The USPS has a great website that allows you to ship packages from your home
. I use this service all the time. I keep a couple of flat rate envelopes at my house and can easily put a care package together for my daughters. Today, I did two care packages and two Christmas packages without leaving my home. I will drop them off at the post office tomorrow (and I could even arrange for pick-up on the website) and they will be done (and you don't have to stand in line, just have to hand them to a clerk). This is a service that they need to spend more money advertising! It is also super convenient to order stamps and have them show up in your mailbox. The $1 charge more than covers what it would cost me in time and gas to drive to the post office, stand in line, get my stamps and drive home again.

Postal Buddy is another cool Post Office thing. You can go in, weigh your package, put in the zip code and print out your postage. You can even do it after hours since these machines are usually in the lobby where the P.O. Boxes are. There are limitations on what can be mailed, but it is a perfect service for mailing large letters.

I don't see a time when we don't need the Postal Service, but I do see that they should be open to changing their business model.  Just like any other business, those who adapt to the changing needs of the public are the ones who survive. As a Realtor, I can tell you that is very, very true!

Real mail will always be around, not to sure about the Postal Service in its present incarnation.  I would like it if it didn't change, but it sure seems like some things are going to happen.

Holly, times are changing and the Post Office will have to accommodate these changes. This is an example, if continuing to do it the old way, they won't have much of a future.

I have been using the post office more often.  They have developed new products and inexpensive rates.  I do agree with you that Saturday deliveries can be eliminated

I think I could live without Saturday mail also, if I needed something desperately sent out there is always UPS or Fedex to get the job done.

The USPS definitely needs to do a better job of advertising the services they do offer...especially their online services. I agree that Saturday service is not a necessity, and I also never made an assumption that anything mailed would get delivered the next day. Instead of focusing on what they can't offer, the post office should focus on what they can offer and spend time and energy on improving those benefits.

Holly, I remember many pen pals when I was younger.  Every letter was like a visit from a friend.  I can remember my excitement to this day.  I'd love to see the PO succeed, but I fear their union contracts will ultimately put them out of business.

Thanks for the post Holly, I have always thought you could close down the post office one day during the week, I do not go to may mail box on Tuesdays, its always junk mail, and my mail box is one mile out of my way home. No reason to go.

Holly, the USPS is a wonderful example of a business model overwhelmed by the changes in the marketplace.  Still, I think they do provide an important service.  Like you, I love to send little notes to people!

Holly:

I agree with the cut/dropping of Saturday delivery.  I would like to see them do a cut back in hours for those really rural Post Offices, and a half day for those really rural delivery folks ( if appropriate).  I realize that sound like - not in my back yard; but it shoul help the cause.

I guess I can wait for my Saturday bills until Monday! I have to say though that I am not overjoyed for my mailings to take a little longer to get there! I did not know about the ship from home thing! I would say that from the line at the post office of people with parcels to ship that they do not know either! I know they advertise this stuff on TV but I do not watch much TV!

The post office certainly needs to adapt to changing technology. It needs to be run like a for profit business instead of a cash guzzler. I am there every day picking up and dropping of my mail so i see alot of things that dont make sense. They seem to cut the people working at the counters that provide service to the customers making lines longer. They need to cut managemnt and provide more customer service people. If people are happy they come back. The worst thing is teh line could be out the door, 2 people working but oh its break time, union rules, now we only have 1 person working and a line full of people sighing. Maybe privatizing is teh answer, let fed ex whip the place into shape.

Your first line really drew me into this blog, Holly. I agree that even though no one asks you your opinion that is no reason not to start a dialog about it. It seems to have worked with all these comments!

The postal service is definitely going through tough times. It can no longer be business as usual. It is time for them to think outside the box, and re-invent themselves like every other business.

Many business models will disappear. Bricks and mortar stores are under assault by natural evolution of progress.

STILL a fan of the post office.  I must admit.

Nothing more exciting than getting a card or letter from an old friend.

Also, love sending packages and letters.  It amazes me that it gets there for so little.
