Kittery, ME - Former Brothel to become Townhomes

Yes, you read that correctly--I did write brothel!  For more than two decades the sleepy town of Kittery, Maine, ignored, or maybe I should say, "turned a blind eye" to the Danish Health Club.  I remember moving to the area and a friend telling me it was "more" than just a health club" but I never really believed.  Well, I guess the "talk" was the truth as the club, which opened in 1984, closed last year after an IRS raid in 2004.

To put the scandalous history of the building behind them, the town has approved the demolition of the former Danish Health Club building and eight new 2,300 square foot townhomes will be erected overlooking the Piscataqua River near the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge.  Each unit will have a one-car garage, three bedrooms and two and a half baths.  The new structure will also have one or two commercial units and waterfront decks overlooking Portsmouth, NH.  Demolition is scheduled to begin this week and the project should be completed by early 2008.

What a cool location. I remember the river from when I lived in New England. Maybe they should have a 'red room' theme : - )

Neat history lesson. I love Kittery but never knew about "the Health" club....wonder what the starting prices will be?

Carole - it will be a cool location but you'll still have to put up with the traffic from the Route 1 bypass.

Monika - the "Health" club was always a bit sketchy...always talked about but no one really knew the truth.  If you read some articles they say the Kittery Police force turned a bling eye.  And, pricing for those units will be interesting.  Waterviews but yet abutting the bypass?????

Thank you both for writing.
