We're all aware of the need to lessen our environmental impact. But do we practice what we preach? Do we help our clients make the right choice too? We specify so much paint, generally 75% or more of our clients need to repaint. So why not specify products that don't damage the earth or make homeowners sick?

Mythic Paint BucketsPaint companies like Sherwin Williams and Mythic have great products that won't kill a sale or your client. Mythic paint introduced a revolutionary new non-toxic paint line that protects the environment and your health.  "Traditional household paints contain cancer-causing toxins that can still be released into the air years after drying." The paint contains zero VOC's, no harmful toxins, and no unpleasant odors. The paint is also washable and offers the same quality performance and durability. Plus we love the retro graphics.

Of course I don't even have a mythic color deck (yet), but I don't leave home without my Sherwin Williams samples. Their eco-friendly and people friendly lines feature the "Green Sure" symbol. Duration Home is my personal favorite because it is green, low VOC, contains mildewcide, and provides a rich coat of durable and washable paint.

I have also added a link to Mythic paint's website on my blog since it seems to be a tricky product to find online through searches.

Rachel, thanks for the 'environmentally friendly' paint recommendation. It is great to talk to someone who can vouch for one of these new paints. I have bookmarked it.

This is great information.  I am sooo allergic to paint -- I have tried the Duration -- it is pricey but seems to be a good paint.

Yes and there are the old lime based paints too that are totally non-toxic.  We all need to start practicing the use of these products.  Thanks for the information.

Wendy - Thanks for the bookmark.

Joan - Thankfully contractors get a significant discount at Sherwin Williams. I agree that the Duration is a little pricey, but it is worth the money.

Terry - You're welcome for the info. Are these lime-based products still available? Please share the resource. Thanks for reading.

I have a design client who painted two walls in his bedroom and all of his master bathroom vanity area a dark chocolate color and it only took one coat... even on stark white primer. He also painted an aqua color in his master and "Whole Wheat" color in his foyer. There was a small issue of mildew above the shower, which the Duration's mildewcide took care of. The other colors also only took one coat on primer.

I haven't seen these.... what is the cost comparison?  (Yes, I know saving the environment is more imporant than saving $5/gallon, but clients will ask)

Kathleen - I found out about Mythic in an interior design magazine, can't remember which one.

Kathy - Thank you.

Melissa - I am not sure of the cost of Mythic. I will look into it.

I have included a link to Mythic Paint's website on my blog at www.mystagedlife.com where you will find their frequently asked questions page. I had trouble finding Mythic Paint when I did an internet search. I had to go into my history to find the site. So it may be a newer company and/or product.

I ordered Mythic paint a couple of weeks ago after seeing their ad in Domino magazine. I bought the Eggshell sheen. What an amazing product. Painted my dining room....no smell and it was nice to know it wasn't killing me during or after painting. Beautiful finish. Now if only my local paint dealer will start carrying it.

Kathleen - You are welcome (and thanks again to those who shared their experience). It would be nice to know how many coats were needed by those who used Mythic and the cost per gallon. I like Benjamin Moore also, and it is usually my next choice after Sherwin Williams. However, if Mythic has the right price and coverage... it might become my first or second choice!

Rachel,

The Mythic paint was about 41$ a gallon.  I purchsed the color Prairie Path a somewhat dark green.  It covered in one coat and the paint went on smoother than I remember paint being.  It covered all 4 walls in the room like I suspected, although I had bought an extra Quart just in case.  Anyone need a qt of Prairie Path?.  I went to my local store they had Benjamin Moore Ara, it was $58 per gallon but still had the toxic stuff in it.  I am happy with the Mythic product and would recommend it to anyone.
