To Exercise or Not to Exercise

Real Estate Agent with Fredericksburg Realty, Inc.

Here it is just about 7:00AM in hazy, hot and humid Fredeicksburg Virginia.  Temperatures in the high nineties yesterday and about the same expected today.

Talk about hard decisions - to exercise or not to exercise this morning.

Sitting here at my laptop in a 75 degree (where is that little circle thingy symbol for a degree?) environment is not really a bad situation.  If I get up and venture out for my little jog this morning I will return sweating and out of breath and feeling that I have exercised enough self discipline to allow me a nice lunch.  On the other hand, if I remain where I am for a half hour longer I will be able to go off to work without torturing my aging body.  Yes, maybe I could enjoy the same nice lunch without gaining a pound or two.

Is it fair that we have to go through this during the dog days of summer?  Probably not, but as the saying goes "Nothing ventured, nothing gained."  At least I am not vying for a position on the local football team!

What happens if I become one of those who pass away while running?  Wow, should I even think about that?  When I was a young man that thought would never enter my mind.  However, with the passing of years the thought just crept (or should I say barged) into my head.

Just think my friends, you may have a real scoop!

Ed, you should grab two soup cans, one for each hand, and sit in the comfort of your air conditioning and do 8 minutes of different arm movements; up and down, right to left, over your head, ect... 8 minutes of this burns about as many calories as a nice jog.  It makes the muscles burn a little, even soup cans can feel heavy after a couple of minutes, and as muscles burn, they burn more calories!!

Not easy to crawl out of that bed at 5:30 AM 3 days a week to get to the health club but once you do it, you're done for the day and you feel better every day when you keep to a regular schedule.

I have asked myself the same question.

BUT I have done the wrong thing and NOT gone out and rode my bike for 5 miles or so to get rid of those pounds I should not have.

Your post reminds me of a line in the book of Proverbs "The fool says to himself ~~ there is a lion in the street ~~ and that is why he does not go and find work."

I think I am going to go and get on my bike and start riding again....... thanks!!

Ed, during the "dog days of summer" when you risk your life or health by exercising in very high temperatures, I think there's no contest.  Stay in an air conditioned space and enjoy your lunch without guilt.  If you remain healthy, tomorrow is another day.

As I sit here writing this, the local news broke into regular programming on television to state there's a heat emergency.  I have a few errands to run which I'll put off till much later in the day.  Better safe than sorry.

Ed,  As Nike says just do it...well my husband and I took up tennis together and play early every morning now as much as we can depending on his schedule.  Even in Florida early morning is delightful and I must admit it has to better than raising soup cans!!
