Market Yourself to the Younger Generation

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Advantage

Because they're the people that's going to be buying, we need to know how to market to the next generation.

Social networking sites, blogs, online videos and virtual communities are some things realtors should consider looking at. This generation uses technology, so we have to use technology for prospecting and networking.

Real Estate Technology Expert Saul Klein of E-Pro has some suggestions:

You may need to go virtual, creating virtual worlds where residents appear as a 3-d character (known as an Avatar). He mentions SecondLife and There.com for these virtual economies. Klein also suggests sites like MySpace and Facebook to show off your listings and educate buyers about real estate.

How about giving them a USB flash drive instead of a magnet?!

Or deliver new property listings in real-time through instant-messaging and text-messaging?

If the buyers coming up do things in a different way, we'll have to know how to communicate to them.

Steve - Thanks for the great ideas.  The only one I would not like is the text messaging or IM.  Most people will tend to get irritated if you text or IM them things non-relivant to what they are currently doing.  I recently started getting text solicitaions and was VERY aggrivated at it.  Especially when people could end up paying for the text message they recieve.

Good point! I assume I would have to ask permission first from the buyer to use up their phone's text messaging allowances.

Steve, you are right on with these ideas.  We need to be outside the box and hit the niche group with what they do already.

We always have to stay outside the box.  I tried myspace but I just have so much to keep up with I let it fall by the way.

Steve - totally agree with the idea of tapping into social media marketing. In addition to MySpace and Facebook, sites AR members should consider including:

  • Tulia Voices
  • Yahoo Answers
  • EONS.com
  • flickr.com
  • LinkedIn
  • Spoke.com
  • Squidoo.com
  • Spock.com
  • Numerous local level publishers and TV stations offer hyper-local social media networks too.

Hi Steve, all good points and the other very important point is the "new" generation hardly uses the phone...they are texting.  Facebook is a site they check as many as 20 times per day.  So I joined them...I put my face there too!  Nice post Steve.
