I saw an article today in a local paper named the “Chronicle”. It concerned the Solanco Little League. For those of you that are not native to Lancaster County Pennsylvania, Solanco is an acronym for Southern Lancaster County and is the name of the school district that encompasses Quarryville, PA.
Why would a Quarryville Realtor be interested in an article about the Little League? Well for one thing my son played baseball in that league during his early years. (He's now 34 years old! I can't believe it!) Another is that a now deceased and dearly missed close friend named Dan Rush was one of the folks instrumental in forming the league.
Anyway the article stated that the League was asking the Colerain Township zoning board for permission to install lights on one of their fields. The article stated that when the league acquired the property originally they needed a special exception to create a private park and a variance to install lights. The zoning board approved the special exception but denied the variance for the lights by placing a five year moratorium on the request. At the time the league had asked to install lights on two of the planned eight fields.
The moratorium expired nearly nine years ago. In the most recent request the League is seeking to put lights on only one field. This is so they have nothing in direct light reaching neighboring homes. Current lighting systems are designed to limit the amount of light that spills onto neighboring properties. That was not the case at the time of the original request and I suspect that was the zoning board's major concern. The reason behind the request is to get better use from the fields.
I'm certain the board will take the best interests of all the parties involved under consideration. But I can't help but hope the variance is approved. My old friend Dan would surly enjoy a Little League game under the lights.
