Can you build "real" relationships through social media?

By

Update 12/11/2011 - Clint Miller passed away this evening. Godspeed my friend.

Mona Gersky wrote a great featured post yesterday titled, "Are We Losing Something "Real" With Our Obsession With Social Media?".

It's an interesting question, and one that comes up frequently in discussions about social media.

I don't think there is any question that real estate is ultimately a face-to-face, "belly to belly" business.

But, social media platforms can and do provide some amazing tools to facilitate making those face to face relationships happen.

And there is zero question in my mind that very real, very powerful, relationships CAN be established through social media channels.

Below is a short video I made yesterday for my friend (and friend of many on AR), Clint Miller. I'd like you to watch this video. And while you are watching, keep in mind that I have never met Clint "In Real Life". Not once have we shaken hands. Or hugged. But we have talked a LOT via Twitter, Facebook, blog comments and email.

Think about that and watch this video.

When it is over, you tell me -- can you build a "real" relationship through social media?

I think you know my answer...

Warning, contains some "adult language"...

If you're interested in another example of the power of social media that's related to Clint's situation, take a look at this post, Think Twitter is Stupid? This 24 second video may change your mind.

I'm not trying to tell you that social media can replace face to face interaction. It can't.

But don't tell me you can't build real relationships through social media...

Here are some other AR posts on relationships in social media:

A great example of a real human relationship brought about by technology. Please pass along my best wishes to Clint. Thanks for sharing this very poignant post.

Many don't know Clint, yet they have compassion and will pray for his recovery and for the millions of others that are afflicted and struggling. Every medium has its positives and negatives regardless if it's Facebook or any other social media forum, yet if you're comfortable with them, then why not and why not use it to the max.

Hi Jay,

What a story! If that doesn’t bring tears to your eyes nothing will.

As far as the title of the post, I say yes, because even if you’re hiding behind a computer screen and a keyboard you still have to show your true colors when creating a web presence, otherwise, people will sniff you out. If anything I believe when one is interacting on line they have to be more to the point and true/honest than when they are just shooting the $h.. in the grocery store parking lot, check out line, cars and coffee, the bar or wherever else people gather in “person”.

Thanks for the post.

I'm all over this.  I was skeptical myself, at first....but I will tell you that social media will never have a relationship, but it can maintain, create and nurture them.!  Great post!

Jay, I think a lot of us are with you in that video. We care for the Millers, we wish we could do something to help. Shit, I've never talked to them on the phone or met them in real life, but they've touched me more than most people I've actually known.

Hi Jay,  I think whether you can build relationships depends on the other person.  It will work in some cases but not most.

I think we've witnessed this here recently with the Caulk family. I have not met any of the AR people. Yet, I feel a kinship with them. We feel it when they suffer. Just as you've demonstrated in your video.

Real relationships can certainly be built through social media. Has anyone seen the movie "CATFISH"?

I watched it for the first time last week and it freaked me out.

Check it out, should be on netflix, and redbox by now.

Great post and video and it definitely proves your point, we are a face-to-face world, but real connections can be made in any arena when we engage with others.

Jay: Great to see you this last week in Santa Ana. Regarding Clint, I agree. I get beyond choked up everytime someone talks about him. Not that I'm stuffing it, it's just taking me time to process. Clint was a major force and I've had a lot of fun with him online like many have... As you say, he leaves a legacy second to none. Bless Clint, Angela, and their children... And, yes you can build real relationships online.
