I could get lost in the Android Market on my cell phone for hours, and so much of it is free (for the price of watching ads). Dictionary.com is my new favorite: Just say a word, and the Dictionary.com ap will spell it for you. Now isn't that a kick? You can even say the word wrong, as is the case with camaraderie (often mispronounced komraderie). If that were not enough, the ap will even say the word for you.
You can search by typing the word (the way you would when using the online version of Dictionary.com, one of my all-time favorite web pages), or you can click the microphone icon next to the search bar and then say the word.
When your word is displayed, there is a second microphone icon near the bottom of the entry. Click on that second microphone, and the ap pronounces the word for you.
But WAIT! That's not all. The display also has an orange splash with a T in it. Sliding that T switches you to the thesaurus mode, where you'll find synonyms and antonyms. While in the thesaurus mode, both of the microphones are still active. In place of the orange splashed T, there is now a blue splashed D, which will return the user to the dictionary mode.
I agonized for ages about what smart phone to get as it became increasing clear that my Palm was not going to last much longer. I delayed as long as I could. The Palm was showing death signs when I finally started visiting the various carriers to compare plans and phones (something I had not done in earnest for several years).
The last decision was iPhone vs. Android. Android won me over when I held an iPhone in one hand and a Samsung Infuse in the other. The Samsung's display is much larger and brighter, and the thin case is just plain elegant.
The only iPhone envy I've experienced is that which comes FROM iPhone users. In fact, I've been stopped by iPhone users who ask me what kind of iPhone I'm using. They are crest-fallen when I tell them it's an Android. And for my real estate colleagues--yes, my phone does function as an ekey (with the help of a fob).
PS: The Dictionary.com ap with ad displays is free, but the NO AD version is on sale right now for $1.99.
