How Much Should You Pay For A Home Inspection?

I just finished watching an episode "Holmes Inspection" where the team re-inspects a house that is full of mold. Whether you love or hate Mike Holmes, he certainly brings to light items that are often overlooked by inspectors. In this case the house reeked of mold with visible evidence in many places.

Near the end of the program the home owner admitted he paid the home inspector "an expensive case of beer" to cover the inspectors fee. What was this home owner thinking? Is this all your peace of mind is worth?

As a recommendation, check the credentials of your home inspector and well as the cost of the inspection. While most locales don't license home inspectors, there are several agencies that certify their members. InterNACHI (InterNational Association of Certified Home Inspectors),CREIA (California Real Estate Inspection Association), ASHI (American Society of Home Inspectors), NAHI (National Association of Home Inspectors), SPREI (Society of Professional Real Estate Inspectors) are a few of the choices. You might also check with the Better Business Bureau, Yelp or Google

For your own safety and benefit, stay away from the local liquor store when looking for a home inspector.

I never let the price of home inspection determine the importance. I refer 3 vendors to my clients. If they have an inspector already, so be it. If you shop by price you will get burned...
