Located between the 34th Street and 59th Street, Hell’s Kitchen’s reputation as one of the “rougher” neighborhoods in Manhattan has since been dispelled as its prosperity and wealth accumulates with Midtown Manhattan’s rise.
It was originally the core of the Irish immigrant community in Manhattan. Here, the tight-knit American Irish community, often poor and from the working class, call H.K. their home. This has changed over the past 3 decades – the neighborhood now has property prices above Manhattan’s average. The origin of this neighborhood’s name is a mystery. Some have attributed this to Davy Crockett’s observation of the then-Irish community as “savages” who are “too mean to swab hell’s kitchen”. Others subscribe to the story of a building in the 39th Street that holds the exact same name as the neighborhood in the past. Many real estate agents attempt to euphemize the neighborhood into less ominous names, such as the Mid-West, but to no avail.
Whatever the origins, this district is now home to many actors and actresses, giving rise to the name “Actor’s neighborhood”. This is probably because of the close proximity of H.K. to the Broadway Theaters and the Actors Studio training school. Famous names like Sylvester Stallone and Madonna have resided in this neighborhood before.
