My food-loving Italian-self has forced me to post some information on Little Italy in New York City. For those of you that are from the area, or from far-away, Little Italy is a must-see during trips into New York City. Just walking through the streets you are magically transported into Italy and the aroma of fresh food fills your nose. One of my favorite times of the year in Little Italy is the San Gennaro festival. While this years festivities are over, I've included some information below on the festival so next time you're in town you can join the celebration and experience some fine Italian cuisine! Ciao!
San Gennaro Festival
The festival typically occurs in the last two weeks of September.
The 80th Annual Feast of San Gennaro, New York City's oldest, biggest and best religious street festival will be celebrated starting Thursday, September 13, and continuing through Sunday, September 23, 2007.
There are usually two parades, each featuring the Statue of San Gennaro. Each parade will begin on Mulberry Street between Canal and Bayard Streets (one block south of Canal Street), and will proceed north along Mulberry Street to East Houston Street, east along Houston for one block to Mott Street, south on Mott to Grand Street, west on Grand to Mulberry and south on Mulberry to Canal.
Last Saturday in September
The annual Grand Procession, starting at 2 p.m., with the statue of San Gennaro carried from its permanent home in the Most Precious Blood Church through the streets of Little Italy.
2 PM: Celebratory Mass in honor of San Gennaro.
3 PM: Religious Procession
Statue of San Gennaro carried through the Feast immediately after Celebratory Mass
Sal, I love this festival and go every year! We had some unexpected downpours this year and I had done a post on it :) But it is so much fun and some wonderful food!
