Greenwich Village, located in the western regions of Lower Manhattan, is often revered as the “bohemian capital” of New York in the 19th to 20th century. Indeed, as the birthplace of the Beat movement and host to the homes of various world-famous stars such as John Lennon, Emma Stone and Edward Norton, many artists have flocked to the Village in the past. Alas, high property prices have deterred these often penniless artists, and the neighborhood’s title as the bohemian capital is now just a keepsake from its glorious past.
Nevertheless, Greenwich Village’s idyllic, laid-back culture has convinced many outsiders to move into this area. This peacefulness and relaxed atmosphere made it seem alienated from the rest of New York, where haste and efficiency is the rule of the day in the financial capital of America. This has drawn many to purchase homes in this area despite the exorbitant property prices here.
Residents and tourists alike savor their coffee and tea in roadside cafes, while enjoying the serene environment of neighborhood. You will find many students from the prestigious New York University here as well – New York University has based itself in the area, and many of its buildings are scattered across neighborhood.
