Orange Beach – Keeping It Clean!

Orange Beach, ALOrange Beach and the surrounding areas are beautiful places that not only attract people who want to vacation but also make fabulous full-time residences. However, when there are dilapidated and rundown properties springing up all over, it can be quite a deterrent for all of the above. So Orange Beach decided to clean it up.

When Mayor Tony Kennon took office back in 2008, he noticed more than just a few properties that were real eyesores for the Orange Beach community. He made clear his intention to see that these properties and others like them were cleaned up. Kennon has kept good on this, and has overseen an initiative that has been successful in getting about 100 properties under control within the last two years.

This task wasn’t done as easily as it might seem. When multiple mortgage companies are used by property owners within a small region, and several of them default, it can be a difficult task to locate all the financial institutions that hold the deeds. Luckily for Orange Beach, once the appropriate party was contacted, there was a lot of cooperation in getting those properties to be regularly maintained. This, in turn, made a big difference in the area’s appearance, especially of specific beach front pockets within the targeted area.

One specific property, Bama Bayou—a 144-acre lot—was a major disaster. According to the main lender, the plan was for a hotel, condo, swim-with-the-dolphins attraction and a shark tank to be built. Unfortunately, it was only half built and then the loan fell into default. It was a real mess— figuratively because it was tied up in lawsuits and physically because it was being completely neglected.  Now, even that site has been cleaned and is being kept up so it’s more tolerable and not in such disarray.
