As the entrance to the Cascade Mountain Yakima is a wonderful place to settle and relax enjoying all that this fruitful valley has to offer. With over 300 days of pure sunshine and mild climate throughout the year Yakima has a slew of outdoor activities for the young and young at heart. From kayaking and hiking to skiing and snow-boarding Yakima provides the complete lifestyle so many yearn for in Washington state as well as out of state.

We are known for our fruit orchards and produce crops that grow so well here in the Valley but that's not all. Yakima is also the source for manufacturing aircraft parts and supplies including machinery and equipment. The soil and growing season in Yakima provide a wealth of varieties of crops and we typically export all over the state and even beyond.

in 1994 Yakima became and "All America City" which is given to cities where the citizens work together to identify and tackle community-wide challenges and achieve uncommon results. We are proud of our residents and our achievements.

HISTORY -

Yakima is named after the Yakama Nation Indian Tribe and the Yakama Indian reservation is located just southeast of the city. In 1805 Lewis and Clark came to the area and found all the abundant wildlife and rich growing soil of the Valley and this prompted a settlement here. The arrival of settlers and their conflicts with the natives resulted in the Yakama Indian War of 1855. The Yakamas were defeated and relocated to the Yakama Indian Reservation. Yakima County was created in 1865. When bypassed by the Northern Pacific Railroad in December 1884, over 100 buildings were moved with rollers and horse teams to the nearby site of the depot. The new city was dubbed North Yakima and was officially incorporated and named the county seat on January 27, 1886. The name was changed to Yakima in 1918. Union Gap was the new name given to the original site of Yakima.
