Finding a good home inspector can be difficult.  It may be one of the few times in your life where you hire someone before you ever meet them face to face.  You have many choices, but buyers and sellers are better off working with a home inspector that has been certified by a recognized association.  The International Association of Certified Home Inspectors (interNACHI) is one of the best.  Jim Hanson of Hanson Home Inspections is a member of InterNACHI. Members must pass an Inspector Examination before joining and each year after to remain a member.  Only about 40% of inspectors who take the InterNACHI exam pass.  Of those who pass the exam...only 10% are able to fulfill the remaining membership requirements.

Its a good idea for a home inspector to have completed some type of formal education.  Members must also complete a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education each year.  I personally completed the National Institute of Building Inspectors course via the University of Iowa & complete 25-30 hours of continuing education each year.

Also, InterNACHI Certified Home Inspectors must abide by a strict Code of Ethics and also adhere to InterNACHI's Standards of Practice.
