State Accountability Progress Report for Burbank Schools

Recently, the California Department of Education released the Accountability Progress Report for all schools and school districts in the state.  This report consists of two different accountability measures, both based on student performance on California's Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program.  These measures are the Academic Performance Index (API), which is a growth model, and Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), which is a status bar model aligned with the federal No Child Left Behind law.

Over the past four years, proficiency rates in Burbank have increased by almost 10%.  In addition, the District's graduation rate increased from 93.1% in 2006 to 94.2% in 2007.  The state's target is about 83%. Furthermore, the District's API far exceeds that of Los Angeles County and California - 83 points higher than the county and 60 points  higher than the state. Throughout California 31% of the schools have API's of 800 or above - the statewide target.  In Burbank, 50% of the schools have API's of 800 or above. In addition, the remaining eight schools all have API's over 750.  Of particular note is the progress made by John Burroughs and Burbank High Schools.  Both high schools have shown steady growth over the past four years, and both schools are well above the average PI for high schools in California.  It is also important to note that seven of Burbank's 11 elementary schools have API's over 800.  The goal of each Burbank principal and teacher is to provide rigorous instruction that engages all learners every day.
