The Nutcracker Ballet in Lakewood
Ballet is a difficult art! Don’t let all that fluidity, emotion, and movement fool you; some of the feats these ballet dancers accomplish are not only physically demanding, but technically demanding as well. This time of year there is only one ballet that comes to mind: The Nutcracker. The Dawson Wallace Dance Project is performing the Nutcracker Ballet at the Lakewood Cultural Center throughout the rest of the season. Here are some things you may not know about this amazing the Ballet.
- The libretto was based on a short story by E.T.A Hoffman called “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King”
- The ballet itself was not very popular when it was originally performed, but the music by Tchaikovsky was. Tchaikovsky wrote the music near the end of his life and never knew how popular it later became.
- During the current performances of the New York City ballet, 150 costumes appear on stage!
- Tchaikovsky was asked to use an instrument called a Celesta for the Sugar Plum Fairy music. It looks like a piano, but sounds very different. Here a sample!
- The Texas Ballet Theater spends 200-300 hours to create 1 tutu! (That is a year round job!)
- The traditional Russian Cossack dance performed for Clara is called Trepak
- Mother Ginger is usually played by a man on stilts. The dress is around 8 feet high and 12 feet wide to accommodate the 8 children that emerge from the skirt.
