What to get your family for Christmas…

I just recently finished Dan Brown’s book, The Lost Symbol.  In the book, Brown makes reference to scientists being able to weigh the human soul. I was intrigued by the concept, and set out on a search of the Internet to see if this was a figment of the author’s imagination; or if there was some basis of fact to the reference.

It seems that back in 1988, scientists in East Germany weighed 200 terminally ill patients before, and at the moment of death and determined that the soul weighs 1/3,000th of an ounce. Each patient allowed their bodies to be placed in a special chamber; which could calibrate a weight change difference up to 1/100,000th of an ounce. The chamber even allowed for the weight change caused by person expelling their last dying breath.

In each instance, all 200 people experienced the same weight loss…1/3,000th of an ounce at the moment of death. The scientists concluded that this weight loss could only be explained as the person’s soul leaving the body.

In all fairness, the last sentence in this article said this story came from the Weekly World News…and the same tabloid issue had a story about a picture of Elvis crying real tears, and another story about a psychic making a river run backwards.

Having made that disclaimer, I would like to tell you about the final month of my mother’s life. My mom died of what started out as breast cancer, but by the time she died a year later; it had spread throughout most of her body. During that final month, my mom would tell me that my dad had been to see her. My dad had died years earlier, but my mom…on more than one occasion, told me that dad had come to tell her that he would be taking her on a “journey.” She said that he told her not to be afraid, that he would protect her, and that she would enjoy where they were going.

There were also several times, when she told me that my dad was standing beside her bed…and that his visits were of great comfort to her.

This Christmas season we celebrate the birth of Jesus. I would like to suggest this Christmas that you make it more than that. Make it  a celebration of His LIFE. It is a opportunity for parents to tell their children the real meaning of Christmas…that Jesus offers us eternal life.

In John 11:25, " I am the Resurrection, and the Life: he that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he Live"

Those with faith don’t require a scientific study to determine if a soul left a person’s body at the time of death. Those with faith don’t have any difficulty understanding that there were forces going on in my mom’s room that were beyond human explanation.

John 14 reads, “Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way where I am going. Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”

This Christmas, give your family and all those you love, the most precious gift of all…tell them they can celebrate Jesus EVERYDAY, and not just Christmas Day.

Giving your family the gift of God won’t max out your credit card, you won’t have to worry about shipping.  You won’t have to stand in a long checkout line. You don’t even have to turn your computer on to get to the Internet…you can simply look up and He will know what you want.
