When you are selling your home..... Live like you are dying!

When you are selling your home..... Live like you are dying!

I consider myself to be pretty darn organized.  But occasionally, I open a closet or a drawer and find that I keep a lot of junk that I shouldn't be keeping.  Recently, I opened my drawer that I cram all of my paid bills and other wonderful things that need to be filed and thought, "If I died tomorrow, someone I love would have to sort through this crap", and no, I'm not sick or anything, you just never know what tomorrow will bring.

I was ashamed and eventually, conquered the personal filing.  Completing the filing job that I hate so much (It's really not even that bad), I thought about the other areas in my home that would probably embarrass me if someone else had to take the responsibility of cleaning, should I die tomorrow.  Do I really want to burden those I love with cleaning my home?  Under the beds, the tops of the closets, under the bathroom sinks, etc.  I also started moving furniture to vacuum or sweep, and it is amazing the things I found.  All those missing socks, legos, cat toys, and even a few skittles, fruit loops and goldfish!  YUM!

When you are selling your house, live like you are dying and you do not want to burden your family with "clean up duty". While potential buyers may not make it to the floor to inspect under your beds, and they better not be looking in the file cabinet, they will check out the closets, the cabinets, the drawers, and the overall appearance and cleanliness of the property.

Clean, purge, clean, purge and clean again prior to placing your home on the market!  You do not want the first impression to be "unorganized" and "Messy" or even worse..... "Dirty".  Once the house is ready.... Start working on your bucket list.  Go Skydiving, climb a mountain, see Bob Dylan in Concert, learn how to sail, RELAX, and remember to tell the folks you love... that you love them, as often as you can!  Make sure to keep the house clean in between activities tho' and don't forget the small stuff! Small Stuff can make a huge difference in the Buyer's Eyes. Remember, you never know what tomorrow may bring.... it may just bring a buyer!

The market has been improving on the Crystal Coast of North Carolina, but there are still hundreds of properties on the market.... Make yours stand out!  For more tips & suggestions on preparing your home for sale, give me a call, send me a text or email, or visit our website at www.pineknollshoresrealty.com.

The older I get, the less I need.  I have done a lot of purging over the past year and planning to do more.  I think I've been watching too many of those hoarder shows.

Bud & Beth - My mom has great stuff, so I am always pleased when she purges ;0)  Of course, then I have to purge to make room for the new goodies!  I see a lot of clients with what appears as junk, but it turns out to be treasures.... to someone!  Good Luck!

Mike - I can't seem to tell my sellers enough.... Clean & Tidy, and DECLUTTER!  Have a great weekend!

Connie - Me and you both!  I love purging, and cleaning is fun to me!  So important when selling your home.  Thanks.

Jeanne - Hoarders gives me nightmares, I still watch it occasionally , but it causes me to purge also ;0)

I read an article that said if you haven't worn it in 5 years, donate it.  There were so many shirts in every closet in my house, I couldn't fit another one.  So I went through each closet and applied the 5 year rule.  It was tough, because some of those shirts were really nice.  I hope the next person likes them as much as I did.

I too hate filing but your point is very well taken.  First impressions are lasting impressions and a cluttered home can certainly send the wrong signals.

Of course I always got my homes so organized, cleaned out and staged that it made me fall in love with the place all over again and regret selling. Not that that stopped us! But still. Good advice. A properly cleaned out and staged home is more important in this market than ever.

Congrats on the feature Amy! I hate to organize! And I have told me sister that if something happens to my husband and I she has to be the first one into my home. LOL. The good news is she likes to organize. Ha.

Amy, definitely a feature worthy post.  You've actually got me thinking about this...well more than I have been anyway...I had planned to do just that around the first of the year, but business always seem to get in the way.  As I look around my home office I'm thinking to myself...where in the hell do I start...oh well maybe next week:))

Reblogged with my two cents...

There is a lot if truth in this. Ask yourself questions. Have you used the item in the past six to twelve months? Will you? It might be best to make your own decisions now rather than have someone do it for you later and not find the important stuff!

I've always prided myself on not being a keeper of junk, but my daughter and husband are moving in with us, bringing their two babies of course.  So I had to move a lot of stuff around to make room.  Now, I have a bunch of stuff to garage sale or give away, and I don't know how many bags of trash have gone out the door. You've just got to get in there and do it.
