Tip Jar: Top 5 New Year's Resolutions Start...NOW!

By
Real Estate Agent with The Somers Team at KW Philadelphia

With Christmas, Hannukah, and  and Kwanza behind us and 2012 staring us right in the eyes, The Season Of Resolutions is officially upon us! Let's get a jump start on things this year.

My Tip Jar tip: Make your Resolution Early.  Make your New Year's resolution now and you will be so ahead of the game! Here are the top 10 New Year's Resolutions and how to start them now:

1) Spend more time with family and friends. Get Skype and visit your loved ones without leaving your couch. Heck, you don't even have to shower, dress, or primp.

2) Get in shape. Can you say Wii? The Wii virtual games will make you forget you are even exercising! If you are a couch potato, consider booting up and shaping up with one of the great exercise programs. If you join the gym just remember it takes 25-30 days to create a habit. By Jan 31st you could be over the 30 day hump!

3) Lose a few pounds. Battle of the Bulge can start now. Small simple actions now, such as replacing all soda with water or replacing the afternoon Grande Caramel Mocha for a yogurt and green tea and you will already have lost a few by January 31st.

4) Quit smoking. This is a hard one. Addictions are tough to kick during the stressful holiday season. But here is something you can do now to position yourself for success:

S = Set a quit date.

T = Tell family, friends, and co-workers that you plan to quit.

A = Anticipate and plan for the challenges you'll face while quitting.

R = Remove cigarettes and other tobacco products from your home, car, and work.

T = Talk to your doctor about getting help to quit. http://www.helpguide.org/mental/quit_smoking_cessation.htm

5) Get Organized. This new year, getting more organized in my home is going to be my NYR. I am serious!  I had Closet Works, a local family-owned business, come by my home to give me an estimate on custom fitting my small condo style closets. Installation was on 12/30 ! (Blog on that coming soon!)

Getting a head start on your resolution will increase the chances of a successful new year. Tell me what your New Year's Resolution will be this year.

I can see using some of those as my resolutions, especially the making more time for friends and family.

All those ideas are great! And, getting a headstart on the NYRs is an even better idea. I think I will tell my son to get me a Wii exercise game for Christmas. He thinks I am hard to buy for and this would be perfect! Thanks for the post!

This year I gained weight so that one I need to do a reverse on this year.  Only about 10 lbs.  I can lose that in 2-3 weeks if I worked at it hard.

Thanks for you comment folks! I love NYR's. It is not important so much that I meet my goal to perfection but that I am taking inventory on where I need to make improvements. The degree of success is sometimes where good intentioned people gett tripped up. Getting an A for Effort is what I go for! I urge you to make a resolution early and keep on making resolutions throughout the year. Because in reality, every day is the first of a new year!!!

Christopher and Stephanie, great start on getting the jump on those New Year's resolutions. The acrostic (START) for quitting smoking could apply and be use for any of your other tips. Thanks.

I always look at the New Year as a time to start over.  If there is something that needs to be changed in my life - the New Year gives me a minute to reflect and get busy making changes.  Good advice, folks!

Hi Stephanie, nice list and great post. Only thing, if you do number 4, then you have to do number #3, becuase that is what happens when you do #4. PS. Already did #4~ 9 months ago.

I'm on that list! I'm swapping out "quit smoking" with "quit drinking." I don't smoke but find that if I drink, I don't get nearly enough done. Plus, that'll help shed a few extra lbs. Now organize, THAT's where the trouble begins...
