This is my beautiful Pomeranian puppy Lola who is 8 months old! My husband surprised me with Lola in May when I returned home from a trip.
It has been a long time since our household had a new member of the family. As a very busy Lake Charles Realtor I am on the go 90% of the time! The summer found me overwhelmed with caring for and traning for a new puppy. It's just like having a newborn--your can't be gone for any length of time, babies need to eat and have a diaper changed!!
On one of our many vet visits for vaccinations, the Vet discovered that Lola had a knee misplacement--(referred to as luxating patella) her knee would pop out and not stay in the joint. She never cried or hobbled so it was un-noticeable by us. The Vet recommended Orthoscopic Surgery and it advised that it would be best to do so at a young age to prevent problems as Lola aged. Lola is the 5th Pomeranian I have owned and none of my other Poms ever had any knee problems.
"Luxating patellas can occur because of a malformation of the bone or from an injury. A dog may show symptoms on and offand without treatment, this health issue usually gets worse and worse. Dogs with Patella luxation early in life will have pretty stiff knee joints when they are 14-15 years old due to arthritis from the years of knee problems.
The treatment for health issue affecting small breed dogs is orthopedic surgery. The goal is fitting the kneecap into place properly where it will not slide out again. If left untreated, the dog’s knee cap will slide out more and more often, sometimes to the point of a dog not being able to walk at all."
We hoped Lola was going to grow out of this problem but looks like January 2012 she is going to have to have the orthoscopic surgery. Recovery will be limited movement for two weeks and the vet said she will have to go outside on a leash--no fenceline running! Are you kidding me....that is one of her favorite activities along with fetch and running to get a toy.
Now what I'm trying to figure out is:
- How I am going to leash train Lola--I have tried on several occasions which result in failed response!
- How am I going to slow down for two weeks to monitor my dog's recover at home
- How can I fit Lola's surgery into my real estate schedule, January is already filling up with business!
Looks like I will be penciling in Lola's Knee Surgery and Rehab to my 2012 Business Plan. Stay tuned for my follow up report in the New Year, this should be interesting.
