A Mighty Church Grew
According to the Ebnezer Baptist Church website it was the first African American church in this part of Northern Virginia. Located in the Town of Occoquan, land for the church was purchased in 1881, only seven years after the town itself was incorporated. The first cornerstone was laid on the first Sunday of May 1883
The congregation was founded by Reverend Lewis Henry Bailey, a former slave and member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Alexandria VA.
Since the original site could not support a needed expansion, a large tract of land at Minnieville and Telegraph Roads was purchased. Several years ago the Family Life Center was built - only a very small portion of it can be seen in the photo below. Worship services were held in that building and, as you can see, construction has now begun on the new sanctuary. There is no doubt about it - Ebenezer is a thriving member of the Prince William County church community.
