You put time and effort into putting together an offer for your clients. You make sure the other agent knows the offer is coming. And then you wait...wait...wait...and wonder? Did the offer make it to it's intended destination.
It doesn't matter whether you have sent it by email or (gasp) by fax, having an agent acknowledge receipt on the other end is a simple gesture. If the offer has come by email it's as simple as hitting "reply" to say thanks I got it. If the offer comes by fax a quick text or email back is appreciated.
After waiting for hours, having to pick up the phone and bug an agent with "did you get it...did you get it?"...seems unprofessional. We've all had those documents that just disappear into cyberspace and so we do need to know the offer made it to it's intended destination.
If you are a listing agent and an offer arrives please just let us know you got it. Save us all the angst. Remember there is an anxious buyer on the other end wanting to buy your listing.
Excellent point and a common courtesy that takes seconds, but for some seems to be too much to ask. I had this discussion just yesterday with friends and the same frustration was raised with accountants, lawyers and appraisors...a simple acknowledgement request that someone received a document is a hard follow-up in many professions it seems. Unless the shoe is on their foot and they want something from you.
Excellent post, nothing makes me more crazy! What a waste of time having to repeatedly check back with some of these agents.

Cindy, seems so simple, doesn't it? And to think - fax machines have become so retro!
I agree - it is a small thing to do, takes little time and makes a huge difference. There is nothing worse than trying to chase down another agent just to verify that they received your offer. It's the little courtesies that make all the difference in a successful real estate transaction. Happy Holidays!
It's very exhausting trying to chase down the realtor. You would think that they would be excited to get that offer. I'm a type "A" personality. I answer emails quickly. I believe in communicating. With todays technology, it's so easy to respond. In addition to sending emails, I also call. I want to confirm that the other agent received my email.
Bryan-don't you love those mystery offers?
Dan-acknowledgement is so easy these days so it should be automatic.
Mike-and when there is a counter and then they never call to say "we pass" is also annoying.
Holly-I've found unannounced offers in my spam email days after they were sent. Never had the agent call to ask what happened.
Bliz-I have no idea but it does seem simple.
Chris Ann-it seems the easier it is to do the less often it happens.
Norma-that's good to hear. I feel as if I'm always tracking someone down for a response.
Dick-have to wonder who agents fall short on the acknowledgement on something as important as offers.
Luis-good for you for your quick response.
Dawn-I wonder how much of it is lack of training at the brokerage level?
Judi-remember when we used to write handwriten thank-you notes?
Donald-this goes under the so simple and basic category.
Kristi-I send 99% of my documents by email and call first. However I seem to get a lot of unannouned offers so I acknowledge them right away.
Frank-it seems to be based on the comments.
Raymond-the great think about email is the simple "reply" button. Just say I got it and you're done.
Dangy-this one should definitely have the easy button.
Iris-it applies to almost any document we send but especially those that are time sensitive.
Margaret-I don't get why an agent would blindly send an offer without a discussion first.
Marc-just because the fax machine said the offer went through doesn't mean it ended up where it was intended.
Mike-I've had to make far to many calls on REO properties to find out if an offer was received and when was it going to the lender.
Rosalie-since most of what I do is by email it's easy to say I got it no matter where I am.
Bob-don't want to stoop to another agent's unprofessional level. Perhaps if I acknowledge receipt they will learn it's a good thing to do.
Coral-what? Say thank you for your offer? Are you crazy? Just kidding.
Cheryl-New technology can trip folks up so a good old fashioned email or call can take all doubt away.
Gabe-have had more than one piece of paper go astry and a quick follow up will let me know it happened.
Gail-look forward to hopeful a face to face in January. Merry Christmas to you.
Fernando-it goes under the category of Raise the Bar in Real Estate.
BB-I've done the same thing and then waited and waited and waited. No I wait about 15 minutes and start the hello is there anyone on the other end?
Jared-sad that we even have to ask for a response.
Keith-a pain that a simple acknowledgement would have solved the problem.
Michael-but that's the way it happens on TV? You mean that's not real life?
Dorte-I don't think anyone should have to wait 24 hours for an acknowledgement of reciept of an offer. As was mentioned before our contract states "time is of the essence"
Cynthia-easy easy easy.
Ed-I always call to say I'm sending an offer how would you prefer it be sent...or to confirm their email address. That way they are on notice that something is coming.
Charlie-of course when your attorney responds it's costing you money :-)
Linda-wishing you a joyous Christmas season in Houston Texas.
Pat-It's been awhile since I've sent a fax and think I've only received one in the last few months.
Sandy-all I want for 2012 is a little more professionalism in our industry.
Robert-should be a no brainer is right.
Sue-it is a little thing and sets the tone for a positive working relationship for the whole transaction.
Joanne-I'm with you I try to respond to high priority emails right away.
I can't believe I missed this one! I am so with you Cindy! How in the heck hard can it be to let someone know that you received the darn thing and will present it? Simple communication and you just make me look needy and silly calling to ask about it! Hope you got an reply finally!
Cindy - You wouldn't think it would be that difficult to respond to one though it seems to be sometimes.
I think you are right on. But, I like you have to call about 50% of the time to make sure they got it to protect my Buyer client.
Thanks Erica-have a Merry Christmas.
Brenda-actually we never got a reply to our counter-offer. All you have to do is drop an email that says "we pass" but of course it is now long dead but it's rude to just leave it hanging.
Christine-you wouldn't think it was so hard to say go it but apparently there are times when it is.
Jerry-if we don't get an acknowledgement we do have to call otherwise you are right our clients could get left out.
