The SKY IS FALLING......THE SKY IS FALLING

This little ditty was inspired by a post from Nathan Tutas about media focusing on negative news.   Just a little love link in the rain to Nathan Tutas for a great post.

The sky is falling, the sky is falling .......Most of us fondly remember those famous words uttered by chicken little as he / she frantically warned her feathered friends of the looming  danger.   Chicken little's irrational fear of a perceived threat (that did not exist at all, as you recall it was an acorn falling on her head that precipitated the need to warn Henny Penny, Loosey Goosey, Lurkey Turkey and  the whole gullible barnyard gang.) endangered her and  her friends.  The unintended consequences of Chicken little's actions had the  entire crew Lured by Foxy woxy to almost becoming a delicious meal.

It seems like our media has become the proverbial "acorn"  Perhaps negative sells because it's easier to look at our situation and not feel as bad about our own predicaments.

Our family has become sick of the bad advertising, "quality entertainment" and the 10 second sound bites anticipating the collapse of our society at large.  "Breaking news The FDA has issued a warning that an everyday house hold appliance can kill you.  As we speak it  is being pulled from all shelves in all stores across the nation.  Tune it at 11 to find out what it is and how you might save yourself, children, and sisters cousins penguin from impending doom."

My wife has spoken .... Enough is enough.

THERE WILL BE NO MORE TV DURING THE SCHOOL WEEK. That's right none, nada, El Zero, yes, you heard me right new rule, NO TV FOR ANYONE!My sophie missing her afternoon cartoons Now as you can imagine this was not too popular at first with four girls and one  large mammal (Especially hard on the large mammal....That's right, you guessed right it I'm the large Mammal) No, news, sports, advertising and reality TV.  Instead we have opted for our own reality, putting up the Christmas tree, listening to music, and sharing our own days drama.

Three weeks in to spending more "quality time" together as a family not in front of the boob tube has been a great experiment so far...Life is good, more laughing, smiling and no negative emotions about  the  "The sky potentially falling  full story at 11" before we say goodnight.

What do you think?

You're a smart man for listening to your wife!  Spending quality time with the family is harder to do nowadays with all this new technology.

I'd be sneaking off to the laptop to catch up on sports and business news.  Actually all of would be online as the internet gets more attention.

Ode to the wisdom of a wise woman... I'm with your wife on this one Phil.  I did the same thing when our kids were ages 7 & 4.  When we got rid of cable, all we had left was fuzzy static.  It took our 4-yr old three days of turning on the TV to realize that his cartoons weren't coming back (it was so funny to watch him sit there... waiting).  For the next 7 years (with no cable), our children learned to read, ride horses, play sports and enjoy one another's company.  It was the best 7 years of our lives ;)

Mel-Thank you for your support.  We have not had cable for 13 years to the chagrin of our kids.  The no TV during the week is really a family builder.  Glad to hear you agree.  Feel a little guilty watching football today while blogging.  Have a Merry Christmas.

Dear Phil -

We have five children. Let's see - #1 had no television until her older son was seven. That means the younger son had TV since age five. #2 has no television in the home. I have to ask permission for my four year old granddaughter to watch a video with me. #3 has basic cable only. #4 & #5 live together and the TV is on in both rooms at the same time all day long. So go figure???

Have a happy day -
Lynn

go figure is right. This is new to us and the kids seem to be adapting well.  We have allowed a little more TV due to Holiday break.
