Located smack dab in Midtown Manhattan, the Diamond District reportedly does some $400 million in business on a daily – yes, we said daily – basis. It’s not hard to see why; located between Fifth Avenue and Sixth and on West 47th Street, the location of the DD is set up to be an ideal place for Midtowners to come and buy their jewelry. Yes, they really do sell a lot of diamonds in the DD.
The DD historically received a boost when Orthodox Jews were forced to flee the Netherlands and Belgium during World War II – it speaks to the appeal of the location that many of them simply stayed even after the war. This helped lead to the quick rise and development of the DD into what it is today.

With at least 2,000 businesses operating in the DD alone, its’ not hard to see why this neighborhood is so well known for its shopping. But it’s not general shopping: diamonds are the name of the game here. Some 90% of all diamonds that come to the U.S. come through New York – and it’s primarily due to the DD.
