The Insurance District in Manhattan was named as such because, as the name suggests, the district was packed with the headquarters and branches of major insurance companies during the 20th Century. Today, the District goes by the name of Financial District, and holds many of New York City’s major financial institutions. It encompasses the area below City Hall Park, and harbors the major financial zones of New York City, such as America’s economic bulwark, Wall Street.
Indeed, you can find many important economic institutions in this District – the venerable New York Stock Exchange, the heart of the global economy, is located here, along with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
