Last night I had this really great experience I wanted to share with you all.  But, when I got home and logged on to my computer....NOTHING!  The cable modem was down, again.  I had the right to remain silent...and no choice but to exercise it.

So, this morning I took my rights into my own hands and stopped by the office of my local wireless provider (Alltel).  I have had my eye on the Verizon wireless data card for some time now, but since my provider is Alltel I had yet to pick it up.  Well, recently Alltel has added a highspeed data card to their product line as well and I saw this as my opportunity to break free from the shackles of coffee shop wireless hotspots.  I chose the Kyocera Passport (pcmag's editor's choice winner).  The card itself costs $99 plus $59/month for unlimited access.  For those of you unfamiliar with EVDO, it is a high-speed network protocol used for wireless Internet data communications.  Verizon led the way and currently Cingular, Sprint and Alltel are also offering the service.  EVDO service now covers more than 60 major metropolitan areas across the U.S.

I now have unlimited highspeed wireless access anywhere my provider has coverage (which is my entire service area) and when I am outside their service area, they have agreements that allow me to access the Verizon or Cingular highspeed data networks.  No longer will I pay premiums at hotels/airports for internet access.  Now I can upload photos directly from the field, send and receive email from anywhere and even list homes on site.  Of course, the only thing that really matters to me is being able to blog active/rain even when my cable modem is down.

Now....just what was that really great experience I wanted to share with you last night????  hmmm...

I also use EVDO from Sprint in the Twin Cities, MN area. The cost is $60/month and after using it for a few months, I wouldn't go without it. I can access the MLS at an open house or a listing presentation, have internet access in a coffee shop without buying a subscription, and I have a backup system if the internet goes down in the office or at home. I wouldn't replace my high speed access at home with EVDO since it is not as fast and I have multiple computers, but highly recommend it to anyone who truly wants a "mobile office".
