Do you agree if someone tells you that DESIGNATIONS are mere alphabet soup  which you aimlessly stir in a bowl or just plaques hanging by the wall awaiting for dust to collect?

My question to other realtors is do you strive to acquire the ACRONYMS attached next to or below your names to swag for the sake of bragging? Or to actually differentiate yourself from the brood?

In my own opinion, designation is your way of creating product or service differentiation. Another pathway to education. To quote Anatole France,"An education isn't how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. It's being able to differentiate between what you know and what you don't."

Designations are not MERE titles embedded on your profiles and badges. They are intended to improve your skills to adhere to and abide by your mission. The mission to service the best interest of your clients. You take hours of lectures, participate in the question and answer portion and pass the tests to learn.. Let me repeat it. To LEARN. NOT to grab the assigned alphabet for display.

However, what we have learned will rusticate or vegetate after long period of hibernation. Honestly, my grey matter is guilty of this. What do we do to rejuvenate the sluggish mind ? READ!!! READ!!!READ!!! APPLY!!APPLY!!!APPLY.

After reading this, just remember, knowledge is power. Let us put our Designations to USE. Shall we? What do you think?  You can agree to disagree.

I'm a strong believer in excellence and setting oneself above the rest with education.  A meaningful designation not only demonstrates commitment to the business to the public but gives referral opportunity.  When I look for a referral, I look in AR in the area and then for the designated member.  Very good reminder to be the best!

Maria, designations can put you a notch above the crowd.

An education and a daily persuit in excellence will go a lot further.

Enjoy the day

Hi Connie: I echo what you said. We strive to be the best. Not only for our own selves--the sense of accomplishment, but for the consumers we serve. Thank you for the wonderful comment. Happy Holidays.

Agreed!  Knowledge is power and whether or not a designation is attached is immaterial.

Good Morning Don: I put extra attention to professionals with designations myself just like you and Connie. However, we have to take refresher course to dig up what we learned.

Hi Kathy: True, knowledge is power. But I am biased towards professionals with titles as long as they are worthy of them.

Happy New Year to Don and Kathy.

You should put your designations to use because, afterall, you paid for them!  Whether or not the public has any idea what any of them mean is another story, but one has to find a way to get the message out as to their meaning.

Maria, I am definitely in favor of higher education.  While I like what some of the designations have to offer from an educational standpoint, I wish they had more exposure to the general public.  Consumers have no idea what these real estate designations mean and this definitely concerns me.  While I have had to explain ABR and CDPE on numerous occasions, no one has ever asked me what MBA stands for.

Hi Morris: I can't agree more. Utilize them as tools for the clients' benefit. And feel proud of the accomplishment.

Have a great day.

Hi Lisa: Do you think we need to inform the consumers of what they mean and how the designations set the holder apart from the rest or stand out? Thank you Lisa for stopping by. Have a happy holiday.

Maria, I agree with you, a designation is merely an indication of a certain amount of verified effort and/or mimimum standard.  The proof and value of the knowledge is really in the use of it.

Hello Chris: I certainly like your use of verified effort. Indeed, we put effort into gaining the designation. And more efforts to make them work for you and your clients. Thank you for your comment. Have a happy holiday!!!

I agree the designation is great only if you continue to use the knowledge learned to help your clients on a daily basis
