Yes, you read that correctly, today is my dad’s 21st birthday! Todd, how is that even possible, you are way older than 21 years old. Well, let me tell you! My dad has two birthdays, one when my grandma gave birth to him back in 1943. The second was when he was given a second chance at life thanks to someone who took five seconds to check the donor box on their driver’s license.
You see back in 1989 my dad picked up hepatitis C from a fish hook while working a summer job to support us kids and all our activities. (He was a teacher, so he had the summers off) By 1990 the outlook wasn’t great and we were thinking we were going to actually lose my dad to the disease.
But, then we got the call, there was a young man who was in a motorcycle accident and had lost his life, but with his death, he gave my dad new life. He took those few seconds when getting his license and checked the donor box on the application.
This is my thanks to that young man who has given me 21 more years with my dad and if you are getting a license or renewing your license, please, please check that donor box. You never know, you may make someone else’s Christmas with your gift of life in your death.
