Down payment/closing cost assistance for some AU and Gallaudet Employees
Gallaudet University and American University employees will benefit from the District’s pilot "Live Near Your Work" program, which gives each school $60K for a certain number of employees relocating closer to work.
Gallaudet President Alan Hurwitz told the Washington Business Journal that the school employs about 1,000 people, most of whom live outside D.C. Through "Live Near Your Work," 10 of those Gallaudet employees will receive a homeownership grant or zero interest deferred loan of approximately $12,000 towards the purchase of a home within 1.5 miles of the school.
American University has not yet finalized the details of their program, but AU employees will be allowed to look 2.5 miles from the school.
Mayor Vincent Gray announced the plan today, saying benefits include a stronger tax base, fewer cars on the road, healthier communities, and stabilization of "transitional neighborhoods" like those surrounding Gallaudet.
Harriet Tregoning, D.C.'s planning director, said to WBJ; “The ultimate goal is to expand Live Near Your Work to all private employers.”
Funding for the program comes from the Office of Planning budget.
