Reason # 2
Riverside, CA is a community offering small town charm and the sophistication of city living. It is the largest city in one of the fastest growing regions of Southern California, the Inland Empire. This mature growing city lies sixty miles east of Los Angeles and is within a hours drive of the mountain cities or coastal beaches. Riverside offers a variety of neighborhoods ranging from the historical homes of Victoria Woods to the new home communities of Orangecrest and Lake Hills.
On September 24, 2011 Kaiser Permanente Riverside Medical Center hosted the second annual Riverside Free Community Surgery Day. This event is part of the Kaiser community benefit program which works to identify uninsured patients who need surgical procedures. As many families struggle with reduced medical benefits (or no benefits) the program provides a wonderful service.
Physician's, nurses, technicians volunteered their time and skills to make the Riverside Free Community Surgery Day a success. 11 physicians and 61 others contributed to the day. 13 patients received a variety of treatments ranging from cataract surgeries to colonoscopy screenings. The patients live throughout the Inland Empire and were identified by staff from the Riverside County Regional Medical Center in Moreno Valley and SAC Health Systems in San Bernardino, according to an article Healthier Outlooks written by Amy Bently.
The tradition of Riverside community service is alive and well as evidenced by the annual Riverside Free Community Surgery Day which is already in the planning stages for next year. Charitable organizations are prolific throughout Riverside. Volunteer opportunities are abundant from the American Heart Association through the United Way of the Inland Valleys.
