Tis the Season to Remember Others  ~ Charities Helping Long Islander's This Holiday Season

During the holiday season, as you gather with your family, take a moment to remember that there are less fortunate families who live right here on Long Island that are in need.  Through the strength of  local charitable organizations, there is assistance available for those who are struggling. The following are some helpful charities that are reaching out to the Long Island Community this holiday season.

Toys of Hope

This Long Island based charity collects and distributes toys, books, clothing and for children and families in need, and the donations stay right here on Long Island to help local families.
For more information, please visit
www.toysofhope.org or call 631-271-TOYS

Lighthouse Mission

Lighthouse Mission helps to provide food and warm clothing to families in times of struggle. In addition, they offer a fun-filled kids program on weekends for children who need a safe and supervised environment. They accept donations at their Bellport location Monday – Friday from 9am – 4pm, and they have traveling food outreach programs all over Long Island where anyone in need and hungry can get assistance.

Island Harvest

Island Harvest is Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization. Helping to feed thousands of hungry Long Islanders this season, they are always in need of donations in the form of food, funding, and volunteers. They even have options for restaurant owners to donate unused portions of food – making it easy for business owners and corporations to contribute.

American Red Cross Long Island Chapter

This holiday season, in addition to helping families on Long Island, the Red Cross is also going to be sending care packages overseas to soldiers who are fighting to keep our country safe. With dozens of different giving options, the American Red Cross lets you decide how your donation will be used. The Red Cross offers their assistance well beyond the borders of Long Island, and is always ready to help families in times of crisis.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to both of you! I wanted to thank you for your 2011 blog posts and comments. I feel like I'd recognize you anywhere! Good people shine their light on others and you are definitely brights stars in my eyes.

Giving to charity is deserving and kind. What I've discovered is that many people are in need, but we have to differentiate the ones who are just trying to adjust to new income from those that are truly in need. The charitable organizations you listed are good ones. Children are the hope for our future and they should never be forgotten.

All the very best to you and special thanks for your friendship.

Patricia

There are many in need this holiday season and I am trying to do my part this year. I know I made Christmas special for  couple of children I have never met, but my main effort has been with the food bank this year.

Sheila, even if you have just a few dollars, most times we still are more fortunate than others, and feels really good to choose one or more charities to donate to every year!
