Amador County residents now have a great new option for disposing of used batteries and fluorescent tubes & bulbs.
We all know how much energy can be saved by using compact fluorescent lamps instead of incandescent light-bulbs, but some of the materials in CFL's are very hazardous to people and the environment, as are old household batteries.
"Take-It-Back Amador!" is a partnership that promotes the proper disposal and recycling of used fluorescent tubes & bulbs and household batteries. In response to new waste regulations, Meeks Lumber & Hardware, in Martel and ACE Hardware and Lumber stores located in Pine Grove and Ione are accepting these items, free of charge, from county residents. This program complies with new “universal waste regulations”, pertaining to widely used household products that can pose a threat to public health and the environment if not properly handled. California regulations prohibit universal wastes from landfill disposal. Amador County residents can continue to bring these items to the County’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility every other Saturday at the Buena Vista Landfill Transfer Station. This program is for residential use only. Business and commercial materials will not be accepted. For more information on Household Hazardous Waste collection dates or materials, please contact Amador County Waste Management Department at 209-223-6429.
Hi Michael, this sounds like a really neat program. Let us know how it works out!
