Reliant Energy, the main provider of electricity for the Houston area has a program called CARE (Community Assistance from Reliant Energy), which provides help to customers who may be going through a difficult time and, therefore, having a difficult time paying their electric bill.
Customer cases are reviewed to see if they meet the hardship criteria that would quality the customer to receive assistance. Customers needing assistance can call 211 from anywhere in the State of Texas to find out who they should contact for help.
If you want to donate even as little as $1.00, you can do so by checking a box on the Reliant statement and filling in the amount. $1.00 alone isn't going to do much, but added up with other $1.00's or more, a lot of people can be helped. It will be especially nice, if at Christmastime, more people will come forward to help.
