A Random Act of Kindness

draft beerLast night, I decided I didn't want to cook so we went out for dinner. The restaurant I chose in downtown Cotati was packed and all tables were taken except one. The empty table near the front door was too big for the two of us, but we really didn't have a choice if we wanted a place to sit.

Soon after, a women who appeared to be in her early 30's arrived with two young children in tow. The woman had a discouraged look on her face when a waitress told her there would be at least a 15 minute wait. When the waitress walked past our table, I asked her to please invite them to join us. They took us up on our offer.

We had a wonderful conversation during dinner and the kids were very polite. They were from out of town (Shingle Springs) and were meeting family who lived in the area to go see Christmas lights. Carefully watching the time, the mom asked the waitress for their check and they were soon on their way.

A couple of minutes later, as we were finishing the last sips of beer, the waitress came over to clear their plates from the table. That is when she said "that lady paid for your meal". What? "That lady paid for your entire meal".

Wow ... we were stunned.

Thank you, kind stranger, and Merry Christmas.

Something kind of similar happened to me.  While on vacation a couple of years ago, I forgot my wallet in another jacket, and someone at the next table paid for my meal.  I pleaded with him to please give me his contact information so I could send him the money.  He refused and told me to "Pay it Forward"  So, I did just that!  Thank goodness for random acts of kindness :)

Cynthia, so often we read the blogs where someone in the Rain is doing that to someone else. How refreshing to see that there is another side to the story. Merry Christmas

Cynthia, it was so nice of you to offer for them to eat with you and the lady was clearly appreciative by paying for your meal.  What a wonderful act of kindness on both your parts this holiday season!  Happy Holidays!  --Krystal

Debbe - thank you for your kind words. I looked up your town of Morganton, NC. You have a population (according to the web site I landed on) around 17,300. You have us beat by 10,000 :)

Carie - I love the "pay it forward" concept, it really is heart warming.

Ed - I'm going to pass it on ... maybe on Christmas Day since we will be dining out.

Krystal - thank you, I didn't think it was a big deal offering them a place to sit. That is how I was raised, but I'm sure pleased it was so appreciated.

Leslie - what a beautiful Christmas Tree, thank you!

Sea to Sky - I felt like I was in a feel good Christmas movie!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Kindness is displayed when you take an active, generous, and considerate interest in others.  When that lesson is applied, beautiful acts of kindness results.
