I learned a wonderful tip while on a Cockerspaniel list serve in housebreaking dogs that some dogs just don't seem to get the hang of why they need to go outside to potty.
Especially dogs from rescue that carry a lot of emotional or physical baggage they react from their prior circumstances.
Wally Goguen who was an Icon in cocker spaniel rescue came up with the idea. Wally crossed over about a year ago and I know there were hundreds of dogs at the rainbow bridge who met his spirit in glee to meet the master that gave them a 2nd chance in life while they were on this earth.
Use a jockey strap. Yes....jockey strap...Dogs do not like to wet themselves and the moisture close to them is a deterrent. Yes they will have a few accidents with the jockey strap on.
So while they are in the house keep a jockey strap on them. When you want them to go outside to potty, take them to the door, take off the jockey strap and give them the command to go potty. When they come back in put the jockey strap back on.(clean dry one) It usually takes about a week to housebreak them . Once they get it no more need for the jockey strap.
I used it on BoZo a black cocker spaniel boy I rescued several years ago . It worked. It took him a little longer maybe a week and a half.
It does take patience on your part and you need to be consistent and concise as to the commands but it works.
