December 26: Just when we thought we were getting rid of this awful 2011, during which we’ve lost family members and adored pets, and had other family crises, we just got hit again.
I haven’t gotten very much work done on my business today because Jon’s brother called to tell us that Jon’s 87 year old mom had to be taken by ambulance to the hospital and it appears that she had a stroke, and she seems to have some bleeding on the brain.
They have taken lots of tests and scans, and we have been camped by the phone waiting to find out more in bits and pieces as the doctors know more. And we have been doing some contingency planning, depending on how this turns out.
Either Jon and I or just Jon will be heading down to San Luis Obispo to be with his dad. We’re waiting to hear what the doctors think. Then depending on what we learn or what happens, we’ll know what to do.
Because of our remaining cats, we can’t both be gone for more than two nights, and because Charlie is our oldest cat and is still grieving the loss of Oscar, he needs extra attention right now. So if we both go, we will likely have to take two cars so I can come back to care for the cats and other things that can’t wait more than a couple of days.
There are a dozen scenarios racing through our heads today, and we are trying to ready ourselves for whatever comes up. I might end up moving down there for a couple of months to stay with his dad, and we are also considering moving his dad up to live with us if Mom passes.
It’s all too much to take in and too uncertain to make any decisions, so we don’t yet know if we will both be heading down there tonight or just Jon for now. It's a 5+ hour drive from our house, so we have to figure out the logistics before jumping in the car to head down, which is our initial impulse.
I will sure be glad when 2011 is over with! This has been a horrible year to live through. 2012 is bound to be better!
