There are some great ideas to increase the sunlight.  With many people having low vitamin D levels - these are just a few ways to increase levels while in the home.  Solar tubes are my favorite - cost effective and great boost of light!

The month of January comes with mixed blessings. Things begin to settle down after the holidays and I get back into the grove with work and the family routine.  But then there are days like today when the rain won’t stop and I am chilled to the bone wishing for a little sun.

Everyone has their good and bad days... but when it starts to take its toll on your energy level or hinders sleeping you may have something else.

Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, is a very real type of depression that affects around 20% of the U.S. population. Symptoms include:

  • low energy
  • over sleeping
  • poor concentration
  • irritability
  • avoidance of social situations
  • craving for sweet or starchy foods
  • weight gains

There is a simple solution, however, to fight SAD. You just need to let a little more natural light into your home. Increasing daylighting by adding skylights, solar light tubes, and additional windows is an effective way to alleviate the symptoms of SAD, while also increasing the value of your home.

Try the following home improvement projects:

1. Trim Vegetation that may be Blocking Windows: This is a great, cost-effective way to increase daylight.

2. Solar Light Tube:  A reflective solar tube is another fairly cost-effective (about $500) way to increase the natural light in your home.

3. More Windows: A new window typically costs between $1,000-1,500, but is a great way to increase daylighting.

4. Add a Skylight: While a little more costly than a solar tube or additional windows (about $2,500), a skylight provides 30% more light than a window.

5. Bay or Bow Window: These windows not only increase natural lighting, but they are also aesthetically pleasing, as well.

6. Replace Your Existing Doors with All- or Partial-Glass Doors: This is another great way to add both daylighting and value to your home.

So what are you waiting for? There is still time to increase the natural light in your home before winter arrives.

Here are a few Roo Specialists eager to connect with you to help find a solution to you daylighting needs.

It is also important to get those Vitamin D levels checked. So many people are low and don't realize it.

Great information as I am one that has a low amount of vitamin D.   Great blog - may I share it with my clients?
