What Causes Carpet Rippling? Can you prevent it?

Almost everyone has lived or is living in a house with buckling or rippling carpet. If you wonder why carpet buckles, know that several things can cause buckling:

  • The wrong padding

  • Moving heavy furniture or high humidity

However, as Randy explains in the video most of the time incorrect installment is the number one cause. The rippling/buckling which we are discussing here is caused by the "growth" of the carpet due to swelling of one or more components in the carpet itself.

While proper installation is the best prevention, re-stretching is the remedy for buckled or wavy carpets. It can add years of life to your carpeting. It will not reverse damage or excessive wear caused by improper installation, but works to prevent further unnecessary damage and wear.

Randy is the owner of A Carpet Doctor here in Colorado Springs. Today he is fixing a rippling carpet, to ensure a longer life and reduce a trip hazard in the home.

Great post and video. I have always shied away from working on carpets but might take a second look at it.

Susanna, the doctor is in the house! Great post, I don't know how many times I've had a listing where the carpet needed to be fixed, nice solution.

I have to agree. I always have sellers fix this noticeable problem. My friends brother brings his super stretcher like your gentlemen has & we just stretch away until everything is fixed. I remember on one really long room I had to sit on the end of the stretcher 20 feet away so it wouldn't bend & move! Looked great when he was done. Not everyone knows how to install carpet unfortunately which is what your post is truthfully suggesting.

Thanks @james and @ Adrian for your comments.

@Lyn -  I actually never dared to stretch myself and after I saw what it took to have the carpet stretched properly today, I will pay attention to the installing with my own properties, so I don't have to worry about this any more. It's not the end of the world but it's ALWAYS noticed.
