8 Easy Steps to Tasting Wine -- without being pretentious and actually enjoying the wine.
Many future wine lovers get their first "taste" of the grape during the holidays, a wedding, or some other celebration. Some people don't like it, some love it, and some are ambivalent.
At some point in time -- and for reasons unknown -- the thrill of having a drink lessens and the desire to learn more and experience wine takes over. Following is a quick refresher on tasting wine.
- Before pouring the wine, check your glass for unpleasant smells
- Pour a small amount of wine into the glass
- Check the color and appearance of the wine
- Swirl the wine in the glass -- without spilling all over the place
- Take a deep sniff and think about what you are smelling, being as descriptive as possible
- Take a big sip and roll it around in your mouth
- Spit out the wine (or, enjoy it)
- Consider the finish of the wine -- and repeat
Yes, the experts do spit out the wine -- and they take excellent notes to keep track of their tasting's. But, if you're fortunate enough not to be an expert, you get the benefit of enjoying every last drop.
