8 Easy Steps to Tasting Wine -- without being pretentious and actually enjoying the wine.

Many future wine lovers get their first "taste" of the grape during the holidays, a wedding, or some other celebration. Some people don't like it, some love it, and some are ambivalent.

At some point in time -- and for reasons unknown -- the thrill of having a drink lessens and the desire to learn more and experience wine takes over. Following is a quick refresher on tasting wine.

  • Before pouring the wine, check your glass for unpleasant smells
  • Pour a small amount of wine into the glass
  • Check the color and appearance of the wine
  • Swirl the wine in the glass -- without spilling all over the place
  • Take a deep sniff and think about what you are smelling, being as descriptive as possible
  • Take a big sip and roll it around in your mouth
  • Spit out the wine (or, enjoy it)
  • Consider the finish of the wine -- and repeat

Yes, the experts do spit out the wine -- and they take excellent notes to keep track of their tasting's. But, if you're fortunate enough not to be an expert, you get the benefit of enjoying every last drop.

You'll get lots of opps this holiday season. Enjoy!
