The Smallest Amount of Exercise Helps

Here are some helpful tips to do the smallest amount of exercise when you have the least amount of time.

1. Take up Stairing - Whenever you have a choise,, climb the stairs instead of getting on an escalator, a moving walkway, or an elevator. You brun ten times the calories climbing the stairs that you do sitting still.

2. Keep your distance - Instead of cruising the lot to find the closest parking space, go for the vast empty spots on the far side.  Long-distance walking boosts your metabolism and burns calories.

3. Pull up short - When you're taking a cab, allow some extra time and have the driver drop you off a few blocks from your destination.  If you are taking a bus, get off a stop or two before you need to.

4. Make every minute count - When you are standing in line, tighten and relax your gluteal muscles (that is, your rear).  When you are on the phone and put on hold, do a few abdominal breathing exercises.

5. Waste some moves - Instead of grabbing snacks during commercials, get up, stretch and move around.

When I am put on hold when I am on the phone, I get up and move the chair and do squats.  You only need a small space to do them in and they burn calories.

Whatever works right??

Great...I used to do my sewing standing up...burns more calories.

Whatever works is right!  Those are great ideas.  I've also heard:

  • talk on the phone standing up (like sewing above)
  • march in place during commercials
  • when putting laundry away bring one item at a time upstairs

Hope those help too!

Something I have done since I was in high school is, everynight, when I lay down in bed, I tighten my abdominal muscles two ways.  First, I just tighten them and hold that for a few seconds.  Then, I pull in my abs and then tighten.  I hold that for a few seconds too.  That has really helped keep the muscles in that area strong.  If I'm listening to the radio sometimes I do my version of chair boogieing (sp?) while lying in bed.  You can tighten your glutes to mix things up a little.

I've been following suggestions one and two for almost all 2007, and they have helped along with my daily runs.
