Today I saw this Inman TV video interview discussing Point2's NLS. It also mentions the NAR's plan to create its own National Listing service. I was wondering what people think of a National MLS? I know I am in favor of a statewide MLS. And I believe that a national MLS could be valuable. Imagine if you will, that we can send and recieve referrals to anyone in the nation, and at the same time save time and money. How? Because, if our clients plan to relocate and we can help them to utilize the National MLS, and, they find some homes that they like, we can then send the referral to a local agent. That would make the local agent's job easier, and save them money with trips to visit unwanted homes. In the same token the referring agent would be making a percentage of the eventual sale/purchase of a home. Personally, I can not wait until we have a statewide MLS, and a Nationwide MLS. Tell me what you think, and feel free to view this video.

National MLS we already have referrals and get paid through them, I don't know of the value.

Take care!

I thought we were already doing all of that.  I don't see the need for a national listing.  In fact, it will simply cause a further proliferation of lead companies getting between REALTORS and home buyers and sellers.

Real estate is local.  Real estate leads have been usurped by companies that are NOT in the real estate brokerage business.

I'm against it.

It would be nice if all MLSs offered web sites for IDX.

I agree with Lenn.  In fact, I don't like the concept of statewide MLS...

Isn't Realtor.com basically a National MLS?

Our board met with a consultant on Wed. morning. He said State Wide and National MLS would cause all sorts of problems, take CA, all kinds of problems. But being able to enter the listings in one time and merge some fields would save staff time, and duplication. You would have a set of MLS rules and then your local board rules. It would work with the MLS's that touch your area, not the entire state.

In essence, we have had national MLS for years; all of the internet websites we use to list our properties...it is international, not just national.

I don't see a national MLS functioning as our local/regional MLS services operate. A national MLS is impossible, at this point in time, as all states have laws specific to Real Estate within the state. Reciprocity only covers so much.

I  see sites like Point2, Trulia, Craigs List, Zillow, Facebook, MySpace, Google, Yahoo...and many others, contributing to the everchanging face of the Real Estate Industry in a positive way.

Ulises, I just don't see a national MLS being a benefit to us as Realtors. My understanding was the NAR started Realtor.com then sold their interests to private investors. What I see happening is just more of what is happening with local MLS feeds, not updated properly, hold overs, and just another mechanism to sell us back our own leads that are free right now. I see this as another way for Realtors to pay hard earned money for something that will only line the pockets of private investors. A National MLS is a bad idea.

Gee Ulises, this goes to show how much I know.  I thought it sounded like a good idea until I read the comments.  I guess it's not.  I'm glad to become more educated thanks to your post.
