Christmas is coming...and we have many soldiers who will not be home to spend the holiday with their families for one reason or another.  Here's the best idea I've seen yet...

When you are making out your Christmas card list this year, please include the following:

          A Recovering American soldier
c/o Walter Reed Army Medical  Center
          6900 Georgia Avenue,NW
          Washington,D..C. 20307-5001

***Please duplicate this idea and share it over and over!  Our soldiers are fighting for OUR FREEDOM!  Thank them...time and again!  I plan to order about 25 extra(s) along with my family's Christmas letter.

What a terrific concept I just received via email!  Wow...this one I hope to see circulate a million times over!

***Better yet, PLEASE ADD any links that might offer MORE OPTIONS for our soldiers. Let's see how many ways we can find to THANK A SOLDIER this coming holiday season.

Make it a GREAT DAY! ☼

Susie - this is a good idea, but I have a better one. Call up the First Sergeant at your nearest Military base. There will be soldiers, sailors, marines and members of the Air Force who are stuck away from home with no family nearby. Invite one or two of them to your home. The First Sergeant will identify who he or she thinks will appreciate it and although it is awkward for a few minutes, that soon melts away as they share your Thanksgiving and Christmas with you.

Susie--This is the second time in 2 days that I have seen this suggestion...I definitely plan to send my wishes and thanks to not one but several soldiers this holiday season.

This is a great idea. Also, for those who have loved ones in the Marine Corps, you can send mail through the MotoMail System which essentially allows one to type a letter through the computer and have it printed in the country where the Marine is located. Here's the brochure: http://www.usmc-mccs.org/deploy/downloads/MOTOmail_brochure.pdf

Also, try AnySoldier.com to send packages to soldiers serving overseas.

This is indeed a great idea, but I do urge you to open up your homes this Holiday Season to those men and women serving on bases near you and yet far from home. It is genuinely rewarding and you will be doing a great service.

I would reconsider this card giving idea from a chain mail.

Policy blocks cards for wounded troops

Sometimes good intentions just aren't enough.

That's what Vietnam veteran Robert Clegg found out when he wanted to send cards to wounded servicemen and women at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

"It's a wonderful idea to send a holiday card or even a get well card," said Clegg, of Warwick.

In time for Veterans Day, people have received e-mails encouraging them to add "A Recovering United States Marine" to Christmas card lists. It included the hospital's address. A veteran's wife distributed the address Thursday at a county commissioners meeting.

It turns out Walter Reed said, "Thanks, but no thanks," to packages, letters and cards not addressed to a specific individual. The policy was implemented in 2001 to "ensure the safety and well-being of patients and staff at medical centers throughout the Department of Defense," the hospital's Web site says. The U.S. Postal Service will not deliver "Any Service Member" or "A Recovering American Soldier" mail.

Walter Reed suggests donating to a nonprofit dedicated to helping the military and their families. But Clegg wants the government to review the policy, likely enacted to protect military members from harassing letters and unsafe packages.
