Okay, so I'm rehashing another one of my pet peeves here in the Rain.

So you're sitting there late at night, or perhaps it's early in the morning. Either way, it's your valuable time, time you could be doing something else. Like 'sleeping!' But you've chosen to be here - at your computer, logged onto your favorite on-line addiction "ActiveCoCain."

And like any dedicated 'Rainer,' you're sitting there busily engaged in making your daily comments. You know, that aspect of conversational blogging where you, 'The Reader,' can actually contribute to the dialogue initiated by the post author. It's also one of those glorious opportunities the Rain gods have designed which enable you to garner those much coveted 'points!' That's right, 25 points per comment, 10 comments per day, 1750 points per week, and about 7500 points per month. If you did nothing else but comment, you could easily achieve 50,000 points within your first 6 months of membership!

Well, maybe you're that rare ODD bird that doesn't much concern yourself with the whole 'point' thingie. That's right, you're above such childish gamery. You're here for the substance, the stimulating exchange of thought, the healthy debate of opposing views. Your well-crafted comments read like a cross between a best-selling novel and a Masters Thesis. You've taken time to carefully digest the author's article in it's entirety. You've read through the chain of prior comments. And now, your literary masterpiece lies proudly enshrined within the comment box, awaiting those final editing steps.

At the very bottom of the comments section, you find the familiar - "Notify me of new comments" box, which you always 'click' on, and enter the infamous 'graphics' code which seems to defy any logic of rhyme or reason. Now your comment resides within the blog, a testament to your valued opinions!  blogging brick wall

And then, you wait. The minutes ticking by slowly. Another comment appears, and then, yet another. Minutes turn into hours. The stream of comments continues, but the originating author remains silent, unresponsive.

The day passes into the next. The tide of comments subsides. And still, the blog author has yet to return and acknowledge any of the string of commentators.

My wife often complains that trying to hold a conversation with me is "like talking to a brick wall." This is especially true if I'm attempting to watch some sporting event on TV (Why is it that women always insist on asking us something right during that crucial 3rd down situation?)

After 25 years of married bliss, I'm learning that my lack of attentive listening or response communicates that I don't value my wife or her opinions. It takes discipline and effort, but if I truly value her, I will listen carefully to what she says, and respond accordingly.

Responding back to those who have commented on your blog article conveys that you value their readership. Out of the 57,000 members of ActiveRain, these people have taken the time out of their busy day to read YOUR post, and contribute THEIR thoughts.

Now granted, some comments may not necessarily warrant a response. The greedy point-grabbers who litter your post with "Nice Job!"...or "Great Post!"..obviously don't necessitate your considerations. But certainly those who have clearly grasped the gist of your article, and have contributed meaningful dialogue should be acknowledged.

Taking time to respond back to those who have left substantive comments on your blog articles will serve to reward/build their readership and communicate that you value their opinions.

Rich - I completely agree.  It is exceptionally frustrating when you craft a creative comment (sorry for the alliteration) only to have it sit, quietly ignored for days, then drift into oblivion forever.  I always respond to each of the comments that are left on my posts, even if they are short and sweet, just to acknowledge the effort.  This post should be required reading for all AR newbies.

Rich,  I didn't even realize in my newer days (cause I'm still a newbie) that I was supposed to reciprocate, but somehow I have learned...  Perhaps because the AR posters that I admire tend to do just that - reciprocate.  And now that you put it that way, I guess it does help give people and what they say "value" when you can show them that you are listening. By the way, could you talk to my husband please?

Jason - thank you. I genuinely appreciate your taking time to read my article and share your thoughts. Some comments don't necessarily warrant a response, but as a minimum, we should always return to our posts and reply back to those who have left meaningful contributions....

Marlene - you crack me up!...I am enjoying becoming blogging buddies. We can learn so much from each other. Reciprocal commenting is simply good netiquette. The Japanese call it 'nemawashi' or 'root-binding,' It is the age-old tradition of obligation. Scratch my back, and I'll scratch yours!

I thought I told you to go to bed????

Nice blog! I agree.

Just kidding, I do see that many times.  You read an interesting post.  The conversation it generated is interesting and the author vanishes.

Randy - there are a lot of people who blog rather selfishly. They have no intention of actually 'engaging' anyone in a meaningful dialogue. Longterm, I doubt they will develop any lasting following....

I like the visual of the brick wall Rich, and it is so true.

When I first started on ActiveRain, I was so thrilled that the blogger took the time to acknowledge my comment that I saved the email notification!  Obviously I was struck by the "Glamour" of it all, but I am still thrilled to read the acknowledgement, why else would I tolerate all those emails sent to "Notify me of new comments:" and "cluttering" up my in-box?   I confess though, that I have on a rare occasion, been a brick wall  *sigh*.

So to paraphrase President Regan:  "Mr Non-Acknowledgement, tear down those walls"

I read a tip from some MySpace blogger after I first join Addictive Rain to on how to blog and enjoy it.  One of his comments was not to worry if authors don’t respond back. He also said, don’t worry of feel bad if other doesn’t respond to your blogs as it was about you and not others. I took it to heart, wait, I’m human why am I having one-way conversations.

Someone else started the conversation and now 10 unique people have responded and the author is not part of the dialogue.  What is wrong with that picture?  You do feel it more at those times the writer says you provide valuable well-crafted pearls of wisdom and no feedback for the creator.

Maybe there is some blogging manners and everyone need to come on board using them.  But that will never happen.  All caps are screaming and people do it and say “I didn’t know that.” And I believe them.

Maybe we can get the blogging god to give them a ticket and confined to blogging school for a month.and give back the 200 points plus interest.

That will teach them a thing or two.  Blogging police get on your job!

Funny Rich, because I've been wanting to blog about this topic for the past month and haven't been able to cross it off the list.  I get so annoyed when I comment on a blog and the author never comes back to acknowledge anything.  I don't care if they acknowledge me in a personal comment back, but at least a comment back thanking everyone for commenting and some brief wrap-up comments would be nice.

And it is 3:04am and I can't sleep, but that's nothing new these days!  I'm preparing for sleepless nights!

I never check that little box.  Ever. =)

However, I do go back on my own and check the new action since I commented.  This is one of my pet peeves as well.  I've seen people get 10 comments or so and never return to even acknowledge them.  Even a simple "thanks for your comments." beats indifference.

My first few months  I checked the box, wrote a post on it as my email was going nuts. People told me in the comments they just go back to the home page and look. I started doing that and it is much easier. I do go re-check the post to see if people responded. Faina wrote on this a few days ago and Donna mentions it was something on her mind. Must be in the AR air, opps rain.

I'll check back later and see if you commented on my comment. LOL

Rich,

I have often wondered whether someone is reading my Comments, because they usually would give no Response. I am a persistent fellow though, and I have time, not a lot, but I have time. When someone leaves me a comment short, and to the point, or a detailed one, I always comment back regardless, and I have not missed one Yet.

Thanks,

Tom Weiss

I used to check off that box...but my emails were getting so clogged up. I'm talking about other peoples blogs...I get all of my responses and 99% of my comments are reciprocated...I fail to believe that everyone does reciprocate. I see one sided conversations on many debates and they do not always let everyone who is addressing the post get involved. And I'm not talking about responding to a "good post"...I mean a response to the subject.

RJ,

I believe many who are new to A/R seem to be under the impression this is a "Homework Assignment".

I don`t quite understand what`s happening with the quality of the blogger, but sadly you`re right in your opinion.

6:39am • #14

I've seen several comments and posts about this very subject lately.  I believe that some of the response or lack thereof indicates whether the writer takes their blog seriously or simply wants to get something up for the points or Goggle juice.  I posted an entire article about members, one members in particular, although I didn't name her, who littered her comment with links to her site and her photo.  I dumped her comment and wrote about it.  Now, a few days later, I got another comment from the same agent replete with links to two of her web sites.  She obviously doesn't read, but merely litters posts with comments to get links to her web sites.  I would like to make an example of her by pasting her comments and photo on a post of my own titled "WHAT NOT TO DO ON ACTIVE RAIN".  But, I know that's not permitted so I don't.  I just dump her.  Actually, if I'd never read my comments, I'd never have known what she was doing.

There are some very good reasons to read and engage folks who comment.

Below is a quote from a comment on my recent post about home inspections.  The reason it's so valuable is because my post and the dialogue with home inspectors that ensued actually caused one or two home inspectors to change their procedure for descriptions of defects on home their inspection reports.

Lenn,

By all means, continue this forum with a blog about handling inspection items.  I know it will be educational for me at the very least.  I want to learn all I can about the process agents go through reading and reacting to my reports.

I am guilty as charged of making it harder to get things done sometimes by going too far in my reports.  That stops now.

If I had not read and responded to the comments in this post, the change would never have occurred.

I read and respond to all comments on my posts.  First, because I am grateful that they read my blog.  Second, because it changes the dynamics of a post and comment to a dialogue.

Our posts, to me, are sometimes like mini-seminars.  If the writer doesn't engage the writers who commented in a dialogue, the post is merely a lecture.

Who wants to be accused of lecturing??

Lenn, of course, writes posts of substance which engage the readers and illicit  great comments.  I too respond to every comment made on my posts and if I write a comment that I really want to hear a response to I will check the notify me box.  When the conversation of interest ends then I simply go back and edit my initial comment and uncheck the box.  No more emails.  It's a great way to stay involved yet not get overloaded with emails.  One thing I have found disappointing, but have no solution to, is that sometimes a post will generate a wonderful string of comments which take the subject to a new level.  Then, someone who hasn't read all of the comments makes a general statement that no longer is relevant.  But, it is so hard to find the time to read and comment on a post let alone read myriad comments as well.  Thanks for this discussion!

Great post!  Sorry just had to do it...

I'm the first to admit I'm as much about the points as anyone, but in the quest there is gold if done correctly.  If I systematically blog then I should do it to the full extent allowed, with quality and as many points as I can get in a week. This is a business and a social network, so both have to be fed for the rewards to be earned.

On my blog with my pearls of wisdom aimed at the consumer how in the world could I not return the comment and show my customers that I am willing to engage in thoughtful, polite discussions.  Never coming back to thank and discuss shows that I'm a cut and run person.  What would that person be like as an agent?  And from my other customer, potential referral agents here, why would they ever choose me to send their precious business to?

Rich, Congratulations on your feature, I was thinking (and sometimes guilty of) some of the very same issues.  I don't get back to my own posts fast enough to comment because I am commenting on others posts and I take my time when I comment.  But I do, ultimately, get back. I have left questions for people on their posts and they are not taking the time to get back to them at all.....they are on to the next blog they are writing.  If my comments aren't being read I have to wonder why I am leaving them.....

Great post.  In a class I teach I keep explaining this over and over.  It is so important to respond to commenters.  One of my pet peeves is a blog out there where I leave comments, and the author responds to some of the comments but not all.  When he skipps over mine and responds to someone elses I always feel snubbed, and I don't think that is the intent.  Blogs are social period. :)

OK I know I'm GUILTY!!!! I ALWAYS participate in the converstaion on my posts but RARELY respond to everyone individually. I'm a listener. Always have been and always will be. I interject when I have something to say or add to keep the conversation flowing. To me that's what having a conversation is all about. I just wrote a post that has 99 comments. I think 5 of them are from me. Now I guess if I played by the rules I would have 189 comments on that post!! WHY???? Is my question. I'm here to share not to dominate a comment thread that is rolling along just fine.

My readership knows that I value their opinion(at least I hope they do). If not......well not much I can do about that.

BUT....in my opinion there is no right or wrong way. There are just different ways.

What are points? You mean we get points for things we do here? Had no idea.

Sometimes we're better at returning comments than others. Always feel guilty when we don't. Instead of a brick wall, that's a brick head.

Grandchild is outrageously cool. Talked about you with my son last night when we got here. He's w/ JTTF, and doing an excellent job with it. Some day, though, he'll take over for us in Paradise. Then maybe I can write that book...

I was just writing about this yesterday... although apparently in not quite as entertaining of a style...  I always refer to it as "abandoning your blog."  I try to make sure that I answer ALL comments, even if all I have to say is Thanks.  Of course, before enlightenment, I'm sure that I left a few people hanging, but for the last couple of months I have endeavored to get all of my comments answered.

I also endeavor to check back on previous comments, too.

Rich -- a nice reminder.  I always take the time to remark to each person who takes the time to respond -- even if they say "nice post".  If they say more than "nice post"  - I will go to their blog and leave a comment or ask a question --  I think it is important to engage in the dialogue when possible.  It is always great to read your tips and reminder because they are phrased in a very positive way that makes us all want to strive to be better communicators -- even if we love the points.

Well,

I've accepted the fact not everyone will read my blogs or comment, but I do get satisfaction that when I see my blogs are viewed by about 4-500 people, that I do get a chance to at least possibly help someone, if not today, perhaps someone they know down the road.

I have to admit that when I do have time to post something I think might help my fellow rainers, that it cuts into my BLOG read and comment time....darn job! lol

Rich,

It is truly a disappointment. Especially when after cruising the blogs I come across someone who appears to be desperately reaching out for an answer. I carefully read and prepare my comment. Before pushing that send button I re-read and ponder. Is there any additional substantive comment that would enhance what I have already written? No then off you go.

I do not hit the button to notify of comments either. I choose to go back even a day or two later. I often wonder how disappointed the others must be who have written well meaning comments as well only to have received no response from the poster.

Rich,

I am a few days new to blogging so I am not qualified to comment on blogging etiquette and techniques. I am not new to marriage and family however. I am beginning to embrace technology. Here is a way to use Tivo/Pvr or whatever the manufacturer calls your particular piece of digital recording device.

When my (boss) wife speaks I pause the thing and give her my UNDIVIDED attention and listen. I have been known to rewind the thing later and pick up wherever i want. This technique works for my daughter too.

Rich, I am in total agreement. I have commented on quite a few posts, where no response was ever given. This is especially irksome if the poster was asking a question, and then never goes back to update the readers & commenters on their situation. They really aren't trying to engage any readers, just trying to impress google. I tend to not read their blogs anymore once they abandon previous posts.

It takes time to develop your writing skills and to learn how to attract readers to your post and engage them in meaningful conversation. But this is a great place to learn and hone your skills.

It's funny because I am one of those people who wait and wait to see if I get a response back. It doesn't bother me if the author doesn't want to respond because I am leaving my imput for everyone, I just wish I knew whether or not he or she was going to in the first place so I wouldn't always be checking back to see. It really sucks when you ask a question. I admit when I was a newbie I didn't know what the protocol was, but many of the non-responders are not newbies, so that's not their excuse. Maybe it's because they don't get points for responding on their own blogs and they are simply blogging to bulk up.

In my blog admitting my first newbie OOoops, you were the first one to comment with an offer to help any time.  I thought that was very, very nice!  Thanks!  Comments DO matter to the author.

Now, about that "Why do women always..." comment.  There are lots of us out here who know our chosen sports.  Mine's baseball, but my niece knows football.

Now tell me, why do men ALWAYS.........no, no, no, not going there! ;)

Rich,

I think it's all about mutual respect...not necessarily reciprocating...because if a blog author has to run to an appointment or needs to tend to a personal matter and cannot respond quickly the 'debate is curtailed' but I would still respect the blogger...let's not judge too quickly...time will reveal who is sincere and who isn't... and I like the way Lenn put this:

'Our posts, to me, are sometimes like mini-seminars. If the writer doesn't engage the writers who commented in a dialogue, the post is merely a lecture. Who wants to be accused of lecturing??'

Thanks,   Fran

how about it if AR requires any blog comment that can't be answered by the poster to hire an assistant or comment secretary to answer the ones who are missed.......or even a ghost commenter:) That could become costly to the posters wallet or pocket book.

Rich - To me, dialogue is one of the most crucial elements in what makes blogging and reading blogs different that any other sort of plain old reading and writing.  There are many posts I comment on because they struck a cord or flashed a moment of brilliance and I always revisit them.  It's nice to be able to see the banter back and forth between the contributing author of the post and the readership who comments.  And of course Lenn is dead on in what she said, what a wise soul!

Okay...you answered my question and flew a question. It surely is better to answer plenty than not at all! Maybe it's just a softy thing but I respond to all comments...and I surely understand about the notifying although I would get too darn many emails.

Call me whacked (it's a good thing anyway because I do not know what "normal" is) but I just keep the home page comments...click back on them later to see if the writer responded to my comment and then move on while deleting to keep the home page "clean"

Okay...flying another question for you. What constitutes a "I'm not going to comment on this one but I'll do these other ones"  for you?

Hey Rich, Jeff Turner wrote a post the other day about "auto-responders" relating to emails. I think the comment I left him there sums it up nicely so I am plagiarizing myself here:

"Thanks for the comment. Sorry I don't have time to respond but I will be out of the office today from 10am to 10pm doing absolutely nothing. If my responding to your commnet is urgent(and please make sure it is) then you can call my voicemail at 555-555-5555 where you will receive a similar message verbally in case you are too stoopid to "get it" this time around. I AM a mega producer, top agent, million dollar producer, numero uno(for those that don't speak English) and I DON'T respond to comments OR answer my phone. PLEASE call my assistant!!!!! I'm too busy making dreams come true......mine not yours :)"

I am selling this comment responder for $29.95 and at that price I will include a Rich Jacobson voodoo doll. ****A small shipping and handling fee may apply.

Perhaps James is alluding to the expanding "waist" that we develop by sitting at our computers and commenting all day?

I try to put effort into any comment I make so that the author knows I actually read the post.  I just won't comment if I have nothing worth offering on the subject.  I don't think it's too much to ask for the original poster to come back and at least acknowledge my existence.  I am one who enjoys following the discussion after leaving my comment, so I do notice when a post has been abandoned by its crafter.  Bad form IMHO.

Rich, I can't believe I didn't see this - oh yeah I turned off the puter at midnight last night!!! You have hit the nail!! I always go back and respond to or thank. When I first joined I figured this out and it wasn't very hard to figure. I then had to leave for a few months because of a death in the family and when I came back I saw that someone had responded and I was 2 months late - I really felt horrible. So I responded then.

There have been times that I have made a response and didn't hear anything and I wonder if the person is ok, really - like maybe they are sick.  If someone doesn't reciprocate with comments then I probably will not return to read.  That might sound mean but I can read a 100 different other blogs - kwim? My time is valuable too.  What I don't get is how people don't catch on to this - but then again there are a ton of things that some don't catch onto - I just file that in the "I am only here for me" column and just let them be. They really aren't going to have the experience here that I am having and I feel sorry for them. Anyway you will see that I have several "mini-blogs" in the comment section!! lol!! I have even emailed a couple of people and said - oh dang I wrote a blog inside your blog - please feel free to delete!!

This is all about connections and the comment section is the best place to make those :) ^5 to you :)

Yeah it is amazing that people don't respond to comments on their OWN blog. Even on mine I try to respond, although sometimes it takes me a day or so, and only if it warrants a reply. Sometimes I get those long posts with 4 words (you know, the ones where after each word they hit the enter/return button), but mostly I get people who have an honest opinion. At that point I feel obligated to respond, especially if they asked a question!

Kim - Go to your Home Page...go over to the left and click on Profile Page (Settings), then you can change your name & business. Many people put their full name in just the first name box, and then put their business/location in the second box. You can play with it and see what works best for you. For SEO, it's probably best to put your name and then as specific of your niche area as you can - like the primary town or city you market too. What search term would consumers most likely use to find your market?

Good post.  I must admit that when I first became a Rainer quite a while ago, I thought that I might look pretentious answering all the comments individually.  Besides, I must admit that some of the commenters I think were just point mongers at the time.  What I would do was to make a couple of comments thanking the group as a whole.  It obviously turned many off, because all of a sudden I wasn't getting any more Featured Blog spots & people weren't reading my blog or at least commenting.  OK, that was long-winded, but I have come to understand that way it works and especially since so much has been written on this topic over time and especially lately.  Therefore, I try to acknowledge each contributor individually and actually it's quite fun, especially with some contributors.

Rich:  This is a great post for the Newbies group because when I was new, I had no idea.  But, fortunately, I came across TLW's Reciprocity post early in the game and that changed everything.  I agree with reciprocity and yet, at the same time, I really want comments from people who truly want to leave a comment and not so much out of obligation.  I feel the same way about Associates.  I had a few, very very few, that I routinely watched for their blogs and commented with no response in return.  After several months (months mind you, so I didn't give up right away) of no activity from them, I decided to cut them loose.  We all are just too busy to spend too much time with people who don't care enough to at least, acknowledge that you are reading their blogs.  Thankfully, the majority of rainers interact and the few that do not are new so that only leaves a very small number in the group to cut loose.

Hi Rich:  I must share your frustration with people who make posts, and then do not take the time to respond to those who comment.  After a while... I would think that whenever someone sees a post by someone known to be an habitual non-responder to comments... I would think to just skip any post by that person.  It just sounds selfish to me... to not respond to someone who comments on your post.  Thanks for sharing...   Karen Anne

Karen Anne - that's exactly what happens. People don't want to talk to themselves. We desire meaningful connection here, with likeminded, kindred spirits... It's like being in an AOL chatroom all by yourself. How fun is that???

Hi Again:  Well, I have often gone into an AOL chatroom all by myself.  That way... I get to talk to a better class of people... <grin>

Rich,

i see your point and I do try to do my best with this, but it is an uphill battle.  I have pretty much decided to blog for my constituency--my market--and not so much for colleagues and since I have made that decision my comments have dwindled wayyyy down, which is kind of sad, but at the same time relieves the guilt I feel over not being better at reciprocating.

I try to respond if a response is implied.  Sometimes there are other priorities.  I don't get hung up waiting for responses either.  There's always email and phones.

RJ,

There are people placing 4-6 posts at a time. They are all cut and paste in nature.

They`re going through the motions.. Much like a child doing a "homework assignment".

Rich,

Thanks for the tips.  As a "newbie", I can use all the help I can get.

Rich, interesting post... When I first started blogging here, I didn't quite understand that we needed to respond so sometimes I did it and others not, but I learned quickly and try to respond to every comment - short or not.

It doesn't bother me when authors don't respond, but I just think that they don't get the point that posts are about conversation.  So... if I have time, I might email them or call them - if they're new that is - to help guide them a bit

My pet peeve is that some established bloggers just pick and choose who to answer to.  One in particular, when I make a comment makes a point of answering everyone, but me.   Sort of strange, I still comment on that person's posts, I guess more out of curiousity than anything.

I blog because it's rewarding.  I learn a ton and make great connections and wonderful friends.

Rich:  I love this post.  I also have ActiveCoCaine and I have been trying to soak up as much information as possible on all the blogs.  My husband does not understand my addiction whatsoever, but I'm trying to learn and learning makes life so much more interesting.  Thanks for your post!

I like the Active Cocaine.  Blogging on this site has helped me find resources to close many loans.  Having a resource at your finger tips is invaluable.

Rich,

I read your blog just in the nick of time the other day.  Yesterday I had my first featured blog and was so excited and grateful to have received over 80 comments. I responded to as many as I could, though I don't think I got to every one of them.

I was thinking that maybe it was okay to post a general expression of gratitude to everyone(I am truly amazed at AR and the positive support that's here).  Then I came back to your blog and noticed that you really respond to every single comment; and your posts tend to get hundreds!

That's amazing to me.  I will try to do better next time.  Thanks for your advice!

Great post.

Wives don't like to be ignored. What do you think we'd be doing to ignore them if it were not for the computers? Probably reading books or watching TV...

Rich, you are a very wise dude.  I actually read one of those posts you mentioned before and immediately went back to update my comments.  When I first joined, I didn't realize that you were supposed to do that!

Hey, this is a great topic to blog on!  I enjoy having people click on and respond to my blog and I've tried to keep up with comments in a timely fashion.  When I read the title, I thought you were writing about blogs that create NO comments.  Those are bummers!  Anyway, Broker Bryants wife took it one step further and taught me how to take a walk in the rain!!!!!!!!!  (Then she roared).

Outside Blog

Being still fairly new to this blogging thing.  I read one of your earlier blogs and from that point I every comment I have made I have formulated some sort of opinion or advice to engage in some sort of conversation and picked the blogs that interested me to comment on.  I actually didn't realize until reading this that the proper thing to so was to comment back.  I don't think I have received a comment back on one of my comments, and I have only posted a few blogs, which haven't received many comments, but I will comment back.

Thanks

Rich-I completely agree with you on this.  I find it completely discouraging to "hit a brick wall" with anybody.  When people engage in the comments that are made on their posts, it's the same as if you are in front of somebody face to face and you are giving them eye contact while they are speaking.  It's very important to let that person know that you value their opinion, comment, suggestion or whatever it may be.  In addition I have found myself commenting time after time on a few unidentified peoples blogs and they never, ever reciprocate and when I go back to check if they've made a comment back on my comment and there is nothing.  That's when I quit sharing and move on to the next.

Tatyana - it takes time to develop a consistent readership for your blog, and to see regulars coming back to comment. But one of the most proven means of accomplishing and encouraging this is to comment consistently on other people's blogs, and to engage those who comment your your posts. Write about those things which you are most passionate about; allow your unique perspective & personality to come through your words. People will find you and enjoy/value what you share....

Lisa - I don't think it's necessary to respond to each and every comment, although, ideally, that would be the best thing. But let's face it, we have lives, our business, our families, etc.. There are times when responding to every comment isn't feasible or practical. The most important thing you should take from this post is to simply make a practice of going back to your articles, see if anyone has commented, at a minimum respond to those who have added substance to the conversation. Anything beyond that is blog frosting...thanks for stoppin' by and sharing your thoughts...

Hi Rich. You are one of my "saved blog" people and I am a blogging "dummy" but I do try to comment. I find that there are certain authors you like to read over and over and you are one of my favorites, so I thought I'd tell you!

My blog is starting to get more comments.  It is a thrill.  Sometimes I get really good input or just encouragement.  Both are great.  Yes I do play for points.  I like being at the top of my community page.
